UntitledThis morning we went to the Doucette Center at the University of Calgary to meet with professors and teachers to learn about the education system of Alberta and the education program at the university. In Alberta there now seems to be a push towards inquiry-based learning. Through this method, all subjects are taught through thematic units in which science, social studies, language arts, and math are taught simultaneously. One of the interesting aspects was learning about an all girls’ schools where the entire faculty works across the grade level together from 4th through 8th grade. The school system is similar to Ontario in that it has a Public School Board and a Catholic School Board, but no French or English. Also, it turns out that in this province private has become very popular, more so than in other provinces. This could be due to the economic boom that Alberta has had in recent years because of their energy production. After our meeting with teachers and having lunch with them, we went to the Glenbow Museum where we learned about the use of museums in the education system of Calgary. The museum houses an impressive collection of armor suits, Alberta history, and arts from around the world. After our museum visit we went to a reception at the home of the U.S. Consul General in Canada. Finally we headed back to the hotel to prepare for our 6:00 a.m. flight to Fort McMurray.
