Segregated Churchyard Marker

St. Peter's Churchyard was segregated. "Not only were slaves and free blacks buried there in the 17th and 18th centuries, Blacks continued to be buried in this separate section right up to the closing of the graveyard in 1854 i.e. 20 years after the British Emancipation of all slaves". P1180183

Unfinished Church

The Unfinished Church. This church, a large Gothic structure, was planned in the 1870s as a replacement for St. Peter's. But there was division among the parishioners and the church was never completed. P1180196

Old State House

Old State House or Old Session House. The Old State House was built in 1629. It was Bermuda's first stone building. Italianate in style, it hardly looks its age. Replica of Deliverance on Ordinance Island. The original was one of the two ships built by the survivors of the Sea Venture, flagship of the Virginia Company, which was wrecked in Bermuda in 1609. P1180211

Statue of Sir George Somers

Statue of Sir George Somers (1554-1610). Bob Burns Park. Ordinance Island, St. George, Bermuda. In 1609, Somers was leading a fleet bringing supplies to the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. His ship, the Sea Venture, was caught in a hurricane and wrecked in Bermuda. Somers and his crew constructed a new ship, the Deliverance, during a 10-month stay in Bermuda. A replica of Deliverance is on display. Somers is regarded as the founder of Bermuda. P1180213p1
