The next few days we cruised around the pretty town of Hama. It is famous for its massive waterwheels that are still in operation today- but just as a tourist attraction! Hama prooved to be full of super friendly people- as always the case in Syria. While I was fairly spanked with a tragically humerous and fantastic case of the runs (tragically humorous like when a clown dies). Apart from the cool school water wheels we discovered numerous cheap and hearty juice bars- which were frequeneted almost as many times as I went to the toilet. We took a day trip out to see the spectacular crusader castle of Crac De Chavelliers. When researching what to see in Syria, Crac De Chavelliers was high on my list. While my energy levels werent at their normal Tiger ... read more

We blasted out of Palmyra stoked to have seen the sights but also glad to be leaving this odd little town out in the middle of nowhere. The landscape was again the same monotonous beige type of earth. Not too exciting but not without its merits. The endless expanse of rocks sand and slowly rolling hills (and not to mention the rollicking buses) was really enjoyable to ride through. It was a pretty uneventfull day. We ran into some sheppards that drunk all the water from my bottle and thought they were hard cases beacuse one of them had a gun. Pffffff. Camped out in a sweet spot a few hundred metres from the road. Good days riding and we covered 79km. Really in the bike riding mode now. We rose early (well I bolted out ... read more

Yesterday the sun was shining in the morning and I was able to get on the ferry for the 10:30 trip down the Bosphorus . This is a pretty big boat! It is used primarily for this journey. The trip is 32 km long and stops several times on the way to the Black Sea. FORTUNATELY it is a big boat that rides quite well in those areas that are affected by larger waves. ..where it meets the Sea of Marmara on one end and the Black Sea on the other. At one time the only dwellings were the castles, palaces, summer homes and estates of the rich and the famous some built as early as the 1500 and they have been building there ever since. There are also mosques dating to the same time period. It was ... read more

Our Just Deserts in Dubai Wasting Time in the Morning 1/18/2007 - We woke up as usual yesterday but felt tired…very tired. I guess jet lag isn’t as easy to get over as it used to be!! Either way, we headed for some breakfast and then went to explore the hotel. Since we were planning to take a tour out into the desert at 3:15ish, we had some time to kill around the hotel. There is a decently sized shopping area as part of our hotel complex. To get there you can walk across a bridge or take one of the canal boats. Kel had been dying to take a canal boat so this was an obvious choice. The boat driver asked us if we wanted a tour of the whole hotel complex which we ... read more

Si I've been here in Jerusalem over a week now... It's so wonderful here! I actually just got home from The Wall to participate in the welcoming of the Shabbat and it was so beautiful! Last week wasn't very eventful because the weather was bad but this week was absolutely PACKED! I added my little folded up prayer to the hundreds stuffed in every tiny crack and prayed and pondered and it was wonderful. I even got to do a little singing and dancing with the young girls there! So fun. I've done so much sight-seeing in this week and I haven't even scratched the surface of this city! The merchants all love me for my blonde hair and it's really fun cuz I get free stuff all over the place because they love my hair ... read more

Well it was surely a good sign when told by the border gaurds in Jordan that I wasnt allowed to walk across the border, and was instead given a lift over in a canary yellow Mustang Charger. Mohammed Didnt go but I did My First day in Damascus unfortunatly happened to be a Friday, so almost everything was shut! I did manage to check out the Al Azeem Palace - after getting lost for at least an hour beforehand. Enjoyed the most amazing fresh mint Lemonade at the Leila Terrace restaurant. I checked out the Umayyad mosque - which used to be a byzantine cathedral, which was in turn a temple to Jupiter. Felt very uncomfertable, even in my Jedi Knight grey robe (tourists have to wear them) really, really shouldn't go into mosque on friday. ... read more

Today I was fortunate to spend time in a church that was built in the 1100's and decorated in the 1300's. Since then it was coverted into a mosque for a few centuries which means that the mosaics and the frescoes were plastered over for there can be no images in a mosque's decor.Fortunately the building became a museum and the Byzantine Church was able to fund and restore the splender of the mosaics and many of the frescoes. They are truly marvelous. The work is dedicated to Mary and Jesus and portrays standard stories (birth ,miracles ,geneologies, temple stories) but others I had never heard of .The giving of a stick with young shoots indicating Joseph as Mary's fiance,Mary in the arms of her parents, bidding farewell to family members...they must be part of the orthadox tradition. ... read more

Arrived in Dubai at about 6:30am local time. Managed to overcome the shock I had at Brisbane airport... of being slugged just over 400 AUD for excess luggage. Twelve kilos over, mind you. Bloody heck. I'm taking up Mum's suggestion of looking into posting a few things over to the UK, because surely that'll have to be cheaper than paying the same again for the remainder of the flight. Crikey. The flight was good. Not too much turbulence, and there was enough to do to keep entertained. It was so weird to be flying over and out of Australia. Every now and again, I could see towns below, and tried to figure out which one it might be. Saw a few thunderstorms... flew through at least one. It was even more of a strange sensation flying ... read more
