Dubai is a very vibrant city, full of people, construction and too much to see in the short time we had. Yes it was hot (47-48 degrees each day) but air con and extravagant shopping centres took care of that! The egyptian theme of the Wafi Centre and the amazing ski slopes with loads of snow in the Mall of the Emirates. The gold and spice souks (markets) were something to see - so much gold jewelry and every kind of spice. It was often hard to believe we were in the desert. Everyone was so friendly, I wish we had more time to take in the sights of this ever-growing city.... read more

Talk about East meets West. Old Dubai has virtually been consumed by the modern futuristic giant construction site that is the modern city. Towering skyscrapers of all shapes and sizes fight for attention and line the horizon like spaceships freshly landed from another planet. There's something completely alien-esque about this place. In every glittering surface, row upon row of shimmering new buildings are reflected. The horizon spells money. This is the future my friend. This is freaky. This is consumerism gone mad. My first impression is I hate the place. Tourists roam bikini clad, or in shorts and strappy tops oblivious to local customs. I wander around sweltering in a million baggy layers and more bling on my wedding ring finger than I ever care to wear for real. Something I realise in hindsight is probably ... read more

10 stunden aufenthalt in dubai. ... read more

On my first night in Dubai, i kicked back with a bottle of Asahi beer on the terrace of the Bahri Bar, and regarded the Burj Al-Arab as it shifted colours from green to pink, and sent beams of light dancing across the sky from it's rooftop. I like this dhow-inspired, world famous building but i don't think i respect it very much. A glass bottomed swimming pool, restaurant in an aquarium, dancing fountains, extortionate suites and thirty quid cocktails? Let's face it, it's pretty silly. Not that silliness should be discouraged but as Abdullah the laughing taxi driver told me later, 'who is paying this much money just to sleep, habipti?' I spent a day trying to take in what are considered to be the city sights. As is often the case, the more interesting ... read more

As I looked at the flight map on the screen in front of me and saw that we were, at that moment, splitting the gap between Bagdad and Tehran I knew I was "not in Kansas anymore, Toto". Business took me and a colleague(or mate as we brits like to say), Marek, to the United Arab Emirates this week. As a quick geography primer, the UAE is located on the Arabian Gulf (Unless you go 30 kilometers across the Gulf, where you will find Iran and they call it the Persian Gulf. So goes the Middle East!). The UAE shares borders with Omon, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It is just a few km from Kuwait, Iraq and Iran (which is just across the narrowest part of the gulf). It’s a very close nit little world ... read more

I’ll be writing a book soon - something like, “Travel Smarter by not making the same mistakes I did.” I have travel rules. Maybe the book should just be, “Sean’s Rules for Travel.” I’ll keep working on that title. One of my early rules was “Don’t make a connection between two different airlines, especially on an international flight.” As there are many problems that can arise from the airlines being in different terminals. It seems like a simple rule, but schedule and frequent flyer miles, and the reputation of an airline can cause one’s convictions to wane. This “waning” has caused me no end of trouble on my present itinerary. First, when I connected between American Air and Royal Jordanian to get from Dallas to Amman, my luggage was lost and items stolen from it. Knowing ... read more

HI Everyone First I apoolgise for the unfinished sentence at the end of the last blog - blame it on the heat. The Internet place in Scario was so hot that I was just dripping and Stacey tried to help me put photos on but we gave up and had to get David to do it when he got back to England. However I forgot to ask him to save rather than publish the blog so you got the unfinished version. Now we are in Dubai and I am sitting in the business centre in our hotel, at a proper desk with airconditioning going etc and a couple of hour on the card for the internet - then we are going shopping!!! Now the last time I really updated you on our tripping around was in ... read more

No Vacancy? Tuesday, July 8, 2008 Our Boeing 777-300 arrived promptly at 5:20AM. We were now 12 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time. We deplaned and made our way quickly through customs and after 10 or so minutes, our ride picked us up. Aziz, our driver, who we thought was names Mohammed, didn’t speak a lick of English. Well, maybe a lick. We saw the Burj Al Arab, a very tall freestanding building built directly in the ocean and opened as the world’s only seven star hotel. Security did not allow us entrance as we didn’t have a reservation for a $100 tea tasting, so we got a good glimpse from the outside and a small post-it from security with the phone number to make a reservation. We were starved and headed to 3 different ... read more

Well we officially celebrated my 31st birthday on July 11. Phew what a day. We went back to the same place where I went last year to celebrate, Al Qasr in Madinet Jumeirah. And it was fab. This has to be one of the best brunches in the world, EVER! I had such a good time. The food was fantastic and there was so much alcohol that it wasn't funny. ... read more
