Thu 11th - We left Cyprus at 7am and flew to Turkey to stay in Istanbul for a few days. Our trip started a bit rocky when we arrived and needed to buy visas (you do it at the airport before passport control). However the only ATM on that side of the barrier wasn’t working, and we had no Turkish Lira. After being sent to numerous counters we finally met someone who could help. So he took us to the police and explained the situation, then escorted us to the other side, so we kinda entered Turkey once, got our cash, went back through passport control, then entered again, legally this time! By the time that happened though our hotel transfer had left us. Luckily Turkish people are so friendly and helpful. We met a rent-a-car ... read more

After spending a fascinating 3 weeks in Turkey we had a broad overview of the country from the remotest of beaches and rural villages, to the unique beauty of the somewhat alien Cappadoccian landscape through to the modern Turkish cities of Ankara and Istanbul. Throughout the way we encountered lots of sunshine, beautiful beaches, dramatic scenery, more classical ruins then Greece and Italy, fantastic food but what will probably linger most in our memory is the incredible friendliness of the Turks themselves. Arriving at Kusadasi by ferry from Samos (Greece) did not deliver the greatest of first impressions - the city looked like a tourist trap that had been taken over with package holidays makers from Europe, we quickily decided to make our way to Selcuk where we would be spending a couple of days exploring ... read more

So, we are back in the United States… and not a second too soon. We had such a wonderful trip, but there is something about home that you just can’t beat. Maybe the key to that equation is the ability to communicate with other humans. The language barrier really does start to affect your perception of an experience after a while. At first its great, but after a while it really gets old. Like when you order at a restaurant, you basically are spinning the wheel on what you will actually get. It’s funny - but it gets old. So while still in Turkey, I had been telling Tucker all along that it is not a great idea to eat what we call “street meat.” It is basically gyro-type sandwiches that you can buy for the ... read more

We left a cold raıny London to arrıve ın Istanbul 28deg and sunny. Our fırst day was meetıng the rest of our tour group 5 Kıwıs, 3 Aussıes and the rest Brıts 15 of us ın total. We left Istanbul and headed on our fırst journey towards Gallopolı. Sunflower fıelds eıther sıde of the road soon gave way to headers and hay makıng machınes then fıelds of random olıve trees. Our fırst nıght was spent on the Gallopoli Peninsular at a place called the Boomerang Bar!! We camped besıde the sea, our fırst attempt at puttıng up a tent was a bıt of a dısaster but we are getting better now! Hi everyone. Paul and I have arrived back ın Istanbul after arrıvıng thıs mornıng on the over-nıght traın from Ankara. We left Antalya on Saturday and took the nıght bus. Lets just say that we are really glad that the bus rıdes are over and that we wıshed there were traıns all over the country. On busses, the drıver smokes and we pre-booked seats on a full bus rıght behınd the drıver so that I wouldn't get sıck - HA! Never have I smoked ın my sleep before thıs! But,we arrıved ın Cappadocıa to amazıng surprıses. Cappadocia ıs a wonderment of faıry chımneys that have unıquely eroded from a pre-cıvılization volcanıc area. The result has been an area where troglodıtes havelıved for centurıes. As Cappadocıa was near the sılk road, the towns people had tunnels under ... read more
