John Elder an American relief worker. He went to Russia to start a Young Men's Christian Association center in Russia. It did not work out because of the Russian Revolution, so he went to Armenia to work as a relief worker for the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Before the Turks had came into Armenia to start the deportation John Elder chose to stay behind and stay with one of his colleagues. He stayed because he knew that the Armenians were going to need help and be thirsty, so he knows the Armenians will need his help;thus, he declined to leave. John and his colleague kept one of the centers open helping 15,000 orphans and helping 11,000 adults for employment training. By the selfless acts that John and his colleague did, they received a letter from the orphans, and an Armenian worker said " the good friend in the time of trouble and strife." John and his colleague did a selfless act and thought of the good of the Armenians to stay and help the victims.
