When we first arrived in Turkey, we never foresaw us being in the back of a pharmacy with Glyn face-down on the tatty sofa getting an injection. But that's part of the exciting unknown of foreign travel, right? The original plan for today was to hang out in Goreme for the day, take an overnight bus to Fethiye and then on to Olideniz for paragliding. But after another dreadful night, it was clear that Glyn could barely walk down the street, let alone sit on a long distance bus. And looking online, they say the buses have three toilet stops, in other words, no facilities onboard. Our hotel was able to let us stay an extra night, but the guy was vague when I asked about finding a doctor. I googled doctors in the area with ... read more

I'd not realised just how ill my husband was when writing last night's blog, but during the night it because quite clear, he was feverish as well has retching with a jippy belly. I thought he might need a doctor. However, I walked down to the pharmacy (getting into town only takes 10 minutes once you know the way) and the pharmacist despite saying he only knew a little english was very helpful. I'd say he knew a lot of english, enough to discuss all symptoms and I went back to our hotel with three boxes, each with hand written instructions. Glyn had not slept much in the night, so left him to sleep whilst I read. By midday I realised that he was not going to be able to get out and thought that at ... read more

When a stranger offers you a lift in a foreign country as you are standing on a street corner waiting for a bus, you can't help but be dubious. Is he really doing it just 'to be hospitable' or will he kidnap us? We could easily end up in tomorrow's news, or worse, a carpet shop. Thrift and curiosity surpassed common sense and I know that my parents will read this and give me a telling off when I get home. By the way, I've got a cat sitting on me as I type this. I'm sat on the terrace of my hotel, looking down on Goreme with a stray that loves me, but also seems to like my cream cheese crisps. He's also trying to stop my type, this is just like being at home ... read more

May 14th: Beysehir to Cappadocia: breakfast was taken on the senic terrace of the Ali Bilir Hotel with its wonderful view over the lake. However the tv screens in the hotel, and everywhere else we went that day, were full of the terrible mining disaster in Western Turkey. Also, the Turkish flag, which is flown everywhere: in towns, villages, houses, filling stations, shops and hotels, were all flying at half mast. The first part of the drive from Beysehir to Konya, the regional capital, was along fertile valleys and hills; completely unlike the previous day's drive through the mountains. As we got nearer to Konya the terrain became more hilly and arid then, when we crested a hill, the city with a population of nearly 1.2 million was spread out on the plain below. Our route ... read more

Today we leave our beautiful oasis in Cappadocia. After another lovely Turkish breakfast at the hotel we went back to "gourd Man" where we purchased some beautiful hanging gourd lights . We Were invited into Suleyman Ikman's Carpet shop....he very graciously served us tea and told us stories about some of the beautiful dresses and brides hats displayed within. After an enjoyable visit and tour of the old shop we purchased some pillow covers and other souvenirs before heading to airport. Good trip home to Ataturk Air Port in Istanbul. We like Turkish Air! GREAT TRIP!!!!... read more

Good Friday AM...up at 4:00 again today....bad news at 5:00 too much wind to fly. Back to bed until loud pounding on door at 7:00. HURRY....We are going to fly! In air by 7:40 after being literally picked up and tossed into basket!!! Most amazing adventure ...no words to describe....our most excellent pilot, Mustafa, even had an evil eye hanging in basket to protect us from harm. It worked :-) and once back on ground we celebrated with Champagne, cake and beautiful red strawberries. Once back at hotel (only 9:00am) we enjoyed a Turkish breakfast and started our leisurely stroll through the village, up a long hill to the Goreme Open Air Museum. Here there are many chapels cut into the hillside . inside each are still beautiful Byzantine frescoes with scenes from both the Old ... read more
