Well we woke this morning with the primary intent of phoning the Fenerbahce ticket line to try and book tickets. Jimmy did try but they told him we would have to buy tickets from a club shop somewhere. Jimmy suggested going to Izmir for the day and buying tickets from the club shop there. However, Rob was intent on experiencing Turkish beach and so after some recommendations by Jimmy, we made our way to Millie national park. It took two buses and a considerable amount of time to get there. We were both expecting it to be a lot nearer and a lot easier to get to. We paid our 3ytl each to get in and got off the dolmus slightly worried that the time and expense of getting there would not be worthwhile. We reached ... read more

After a late night and a couple of bad nights sleep in a row I opted to stay in bed whilst Rob went to breakfast. I didn't sleep much but when Rob came back we took our time getting up and ready. Once up, we strolled down the road to see one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Ok, well it used to be one of the wonders but now all that is left is a pillar and plenty of stones. Anyway we had a look and took the obligatory photos and then climbed up to the top of the site. As we were climbing up, Rob caught sight of a tortoise just walking up the hill to the top of the ruins. We followed it around for a while until it seemed panicked ... read more

We both woke and dressed for breakfast even though Turkish breakfasts seem to leave a lot to be desired. We were both pleasantly surprised with the feast that was laid out in front of us. We sat on the roof terrace with a view of the castle and ate breads, spreads, eggs and fruit. Jimmy the owner of the place told us that his dad could take us on a tour of the sights if we liked. We weren't planning to see Ephesus till tomorrow but this was a one day offer so we took it. Jimmy kept on talking about Visionary house which neither of us had a clue about and it took us a while to figure out that he said Virgin Mary's house. Anyway we paid 10ytl to get in the precinct which ... read more

After being allowed a late checkout we quickly packed and paid for the nights stay. Without consulting a map we set off searching for a quiet place to eat our picnic purchased the day before, after a short walk we realised that Izmir is larger than Liverpool and it wouldn't quite be that easy. A quick look in the guidebook showed that we were heading towards the sea and that it would be a good place to look. The road to the sea was bustling with people and shops; there were many clothes shops selling cheap items all along the road. Every so often there were little trains whizzing round plastic tracks at little stalls selling this and that. Izmir seems to have embraced the sandwich more than other Turkish towns with regular shops and vendors ... read more

Another 7hr bus trip from Canakkele to Secuk - they seem to be getting easier. We got in just after dark so I found my hostel - Aust & NZ hostel, checked in, had food then chatted with the others. It’s quite nice here, a roof terrace (where dinner is served) that looks over the town, a downstairs courtyard full of long seats and plenty of cushions and even a huge inside tv/movie room. That was me on the first night, hung out with York from Germany, Hamish from Canada and Mark from London. An absolutely gorgeous day today so up for breaky then Harry (the manager) drives 5 of us into Ephesus. What an amazing place. Just to walk down the former main street and look into the remains of the Temple of Hadrian, and ... read more

“Mister, do you need a nice room for the night?” was the first thing I heard as I stepped off of the nightmarish bus in Selçuk. My cramped, uncomfortable seat had left me in a grumpy mood and my muscles were in the first stages of atrophy, so I was not in the mood for a long search for a place to stay. I turned to the woman that had asked the question and mustered the best smile I could. She then said, “I have a nice pension just around the corner.” We quickly discussed all of the important points, such as cost, location and amenities and they were all to my liking. I told her that I would like to see a room. She smiled and motioned to me to follow her. We left the ... read more

The Travelblog site has been down the last week so not sure if this will ever see screen time. Important to us however is the recording of our adventures so we will continue. We did a whirlwind tour of Pamukkale. Getting off the overnight bus from Cappadocia at 7am, we considered it a victory just to have made it, given the current state of the troop’s intestinal tracts. Not being able to get into our rooms until 11am, we wandered in a fog and just vegged (sp?) in the Turkish lounge of the Venus Hotel. Sleeping our way through the early afternoon and swimming in the pool, Karyn gave us a ride up to the top gate of Pamukkale at 4:30pm. We had hoped to beat the heat and the crowds by going to the cliffs ... read more
