We arrived at Ephesus at 8am to get in before the cruise ship groups arrived and already it was like 35deg outside! We got haggled coming in by desperate turks trying to sell us hats and sunscreen and all sorts. We did buy water off them and left it of that. There were a few stalls outside claiming on large banners that they sold “genuine fake watches!” So funny!
Ephesus was amazing! It was huge! Apparently about 250,000 people lived in Ephesus back in the day and about 25,000 slaves. The site was massive and they had just found so so many remains and restored things. It amazes me how thye have just found so much! We learnt yesterday what the symbol for medicine was – a tripod, glass of milk and a snake combined. And we saw it engraved today in marble on a pillar. Was pretty cool. We saw streets, brothels, underground cheeky lil tunnels leading from the main square where men used to sneak from the main square to the brothel while the wives were home! We saw the library, temples, the public bathroom for men! Which apparently had a pool in the middle, marble toilets all
around and supposedly the slaves used to come in and warm the seats for their masters. Apparently men used to go there for hours to hang out and gossip and smoke and drink while sitting on the toilets! Makes me just do a wee chuckle ho they get all these stories and where from! Like how the heck do people know that! Anyway it makes for an interesting place! We saw a huge amphitheatre called the Grand Theatre which seated 25,000 people and ben had already been told yesterday that he would be performing for us all there to check the acoustics! And he actually did it! Our guide had taught us this stupid Korean action song about fruit cocktails which ben performed centre stage as we sat in the marble stalls and he even did all the actions! I was very impressed and the asian tourists were clapping and even yelling “encore encore” at him! Was really funny! We got told the temple where the Virgin Mary was declared mother of Jesus, was there, but we didn’t see it unfortunately. I would have liked to have seen it. We were there about 2 hours and then got outta there
was everyone started piling in and it started getting scorching hot!!
We drove for about 15mins to get to the Turkish delight shop which was actually quite impressive. So much stuff and we got to taste lots too. Kate and I stocked up on some moisturiser which we have been going without for the last week – long story, some apple tea for me and some Turkish delight for us all. So now we have some treats! It was much better that the roses chocs, which is all i associate Turkish delight with and always give those ones away!
After the shop we had a 5 hour drive to our hotel in fethiye. We had a few stops for toilet breaks, most people watched borat, I watched the bachelorette on my laptop which made the time fly by! And when we got to the hotel we unfortunately had to say bye to our closest friends on the trip but only for a few days, as they are doig a boat trip for the next 3 days! I heard good news that jess and the boys are arriving tomorrow so we will get to hang out with them tomorrow
which will be fun. Our hotel isreally cute and even has 3 waterslides into the pool!! We had another very average buffet dinner which we are all getting very sick of – where is my kebab?! We hung out for a while with the small group that is now only 8 people for a few days till we got bitten by mossies and headed in to have an early night! Alot of driving today but had a good day and we are all very excited about a sleep in till 9am tomorrow!!
