We borrowed a car and went on a day trip to Madaba, about 25km south of Amman. Known as the City of Mosaics, Madaba is an old Christian part of Jordan with a very long history. Madaba is mentioned in the Bible (as a Moabite border city) in Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9. The city was ruled by the Romans and later the Byzantines. A typical tourist destination in Madaba is the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George. In the floor of the church is a mosaic map of Holy Land dating from the 6th century AD. The map shows details of Palestine and the Nile Delta. Apparently, this map is one of the few records of how Jerusalem looked after its destruction and rebuilding in 70 AD. Local stories suggest that mosaics exist underneath every ... read more

If only they had a Starbuck's here, I would never leave the Dead Sea Marriot! Pictures can’t do justice to the beauty and opulence of this place. Anything that I would attempt to capture would be insufficient, so for those who are interested, I refer you to the website (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/qmdjv-jordan-valley-marriott-resort-and-spa/). In addition to the beaches and spa, the hotel has two movie theatres, seven restaurants and bars, a real gym with weights and aerobic machines, a games room, three swimming pools, and the mineral pool. Once you finish bathing in the sea, the attendant on the beach hands each swimmer a handful of dead sea mud (you would think I would have had enough of dirt by now), which you rub on your skin and let sit for five minutes before rinsing in fresh water. Wow, so much to write. Internet has been a little spotty - deal. Bethany, Nathan, McKenzie, and Rachel took me to the bus station in Fang, for the 3-hour van ride to Chiang Rai. I already miss them - crap. I sat next to a monk on the ride down, and he knew English fairly well. He even negotiated me a kickin' fare for a tuk-tuk back to the airport! Steve's travel hint for today: when your new monk friend negotiates your fare, you win. The flight to BKK was uneventful - I ended up spending a little more than I normally would to get a decent hotel right near the airport. It even had a fitness center - spot on. As I planned my Jordan itinerary on the flight to Abu Dhabi, I began to ... read more

The ancient city of Madaba offers the largest and best preserved range of mosaics in Jordan. A short one hour mini-bus trip from Jordan's northern bus station, this city is setup well to stroll around to each of the sites. These included the the Madaba Archaeological Park, St Georges Church, Madaba Museum and Church of the Apostles. The Archaeological Park contains a number of original floors in the Church of the Virgin and the Hippolytus Hall, as well as a studio and workshop to learn and continue the art of mosaics. St Georges church has what remains of the floor, which was originally a very detailed decorative map of the greater Jordan Valley area. It also has many new mosaics and paintings, all very impressive. The Church of the Apostles has the very impressive "Personification of ... read more

The flight over to Jordan was a pleasant way to while away the hour or so, although it's the only flight I've been on that's had a bouncer at the door as you got on the plane. I'm guessing that they take security a little serious in this part of the world as this miniature man mountain got on the plane and sat down beside me at the last moment, after the seatbelt light was switched off he vanished down the back of the plane only to return when he strolled up the aisle sussing everyone out. Come time to land and he was down the back of the plane somewhere with the crew. Being the adventurous sort that I am I had a driver waiting at the airport waiting to take me to Madaba to ... read more

...doesn't look so promising from the air. Dry, and very hot. After landing at the airport (I only slept for about 45 minutes all night), we drove to the town of Madaba. Here we enjoyed a wonderful lunch at a mostly empty restaurant. During Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. Imagine a day of 104 degrees, and you can't even have a sip of water! We then traveled to Mount Nebo. I stood in the very spot where Moses looked across the Jordan River into the Promised Land before he died. The city of Jericho is visible straight ahead, and the Dead Sea is off to the left.... read more

1 Sep - Ramadan starts. Officially on my own now...ho hum. I gave Nafis my mobile number so he keeps calling. Finally, I pick up and agree that he can drive me to Madaba. Found a great, cheap wee hotel online. Nafis has difficulty finding it but eventually, we find it and he drops me off. After various conversations that he thinks of me as his sister, if I have any problems I call him and that I should find a husband when I get home. What a guy! 2 - 5 September - v relaxing week just chilling out in this great, family run hotel. Read loads, email, get the blog up to date, sort through my photos (even manage to get them onto disk!), eat two nights in the hotel on their terrace and ... read more

26 Aug - feeling back to normal today. We start our journey south through Jordan. First stop, Madaba - the City of Mosaics. I instantly get a good vibe about this town and definitely think I'll come back here next week when the tour finishes and I have 5 days on my own in Jordan. It's laid back, not too touristy, friendly and mostly Christian. Mosaic rules in this area, culminating in the oldest Mosaic map - the Great Map of Palestine from the 6th century, which is housed within a cute, wee Greek Orthodox church. We then head just 15 mins west of Madaba to Mount Nebo, where Moses was shown the Holy Land and is believed to be buried. It is completely breathtaking and beyond belief to look out over Israel, Jericho, Jerusalem and ... read more

Hi guys! Well here we are in long awaited Jordan - we have been so busy, making the most of our 11 days in this amazing place. Our overnight flight was uneventful (thanks to those little pink pills) and we even managed to get a bit of sleep in our cramped bmi economy class seats. As promised, a taxi driver was waiting for us at the airport, holding up a sign for ‘Mr Hawkes’ After sorting our visitor visas and getting into the taxi, a strange thing happened. Our taxi driver actually charged us the pre-arranged amount! He was very kind and polite too so a big thumbs up to Jordan so far. This has to have been our most pleasant ‘airport - taxi - into town’ adventure yet. The first thing that I noticed about ... read more

Country of the Hashimite Kingdom (which means the kings are direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad), Jordan is richer and more orderly than Egypt. With phosphate and cement export, mostly to China, and aids from US for its important role in Middle East peace process, Jordanian economy is very strong. 1 USD = .7 Jordanian Dinar. Jordan's strengths is also visible in its work force. Egyptians, Philippians, and Africans fill most of the service jobs here. Day 13 - Wadi Rum Wadi means valley in Arabic. This is a well preserved national park, with landscapes resembling that of Utah and Colorado. It also contains many TH Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) sites, such as the valley where the Arab army camped when fighting the Ottomans in the Arab revolt during WWI, the mountain range he named 7 ... read more
