MADRID. 7,8,9,10 December, 2014 Good Weather
We arrived late afternoon, much colder here, and took the taxi to our hotel in the centre of town.
The streets are teeming with people, a public holiday here on Monday, and every Spaniard must be on the streets of the capital ! The crowd is so thick that you get pushed along, with no opportunity of window shopping.
We went for an early morning, 11am, walk, sun rises at 8.30 am, Spaniards at 12.30pm (bed at 12.30am). The parks had frost, although it was a crisp clear blue sky. Walked through the Plaza del Sol, along the Grand Via, saw the King's Palace right opposite the Madrid Cathedral ( the royals and church were on good terms in the century of construction). Buildings are grand, although we both feel that Madrid does not have the charm of other Spanish cities we have visited.
Food is difficult, eating Italian, however it is much better here than our experience in Italy !!
Evening dining starts at 8.30 pm! Lunch3-5 pm, many don't eat breakfast because of the late evening meal. We like to eat an evening meal at about 7-7.30 so
finding an eatery was challenging.
Visited the food market, not a market in the sense of the other produce markets previously visited in other centres, more fashionable with tapas eateries and bodegas. We enjoyed it ! Somewhat similar to Ferry Road Market. Later visited Salamanca, the fashion district, then onto the Prado, Spain's principal art gallery.
This is our last European city. We have enjoyed our travels, seen some excellent sites, enjoyed the food in Greece and Portugal, and Mem found us good quality, reasonable price Accommodation. She will hopefully pursue this as a business opportunity in holiday planning for others, when she returns to the GC.
