Chester
St Werburgh's Street Back to May 1993 and our Europe & United Kingdom trip.
Amsterdam, Bavaria and work done and dusted, Paul was officially on holiday now and time to move on to the United Kingdom to meet up with family. All our flights for this trip was on Lufthansa, so we flew from Amsterdam back to Frankfurt and then on to Manchester.
Paul's sister and brother-in-law met us at the airport and we drove to
Darwin where they live. It was so good to see Karen & Clive after so many years and as we were only spending three days with them and their son and daughter, we had to make the most of it. So much catching up to do, so we chatted non stop in the car.
What struck us first was the narrow roads, lovely dry stone walls seemingly stretching for miles and miles and everything was GREEN! Beautiful rolling green hills and dales. Of course it was raining when we got there, what else would it be doing in the UK!! One of the funniest sights was seeing people fishing with their green umbrellas while it was raining. I suppose they don't
Chester
Such a pretty town, but alas this photo doesn't do it justice. have much of a choice, do they if they want to go fishing? After dinner the first night we went for a walk on the moors – once more so much greenery. So unusual for us as well that it only got dark at about 10 pm at night so you could still enjoy the outdoors a bit longer.
Karen & Clive proceeded to show us as much as possible of the countryside near where they lived. We drove through the
Lake Districts with its picturesque lakes, forests and mountains and took a small ferry across one of the lakes. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to walk around much, as there are some lovely places to walk, but we were glad we saw what we did.
We went to
Chester and what a beautiful historical town with its Tudor style buildings. Karen & Clive showed us a little hidden treasure – they took us into an insignificant shop to show us the Roman ruins beneath it. It might not have been as impressive as the rest of the larger Roman ruins in Chester but it was equally special for us to see.
Lake Districts
On the way to the ferry. Another highlight was visiting an old cotton mill - Quarry Bank Mill, which was still working. How sad to know that children used to work in the mill to earn a living. The conditions they lived in was not the greatest either and the noise inside the mill of the machinery played havoc to their hearing as well.
Of course we had to have a pub lunch as well. Such quaint pubs that had obviously been renovated over the years, but still with a rich historical feel to them. I still remember having scampi for lunch – yum! We did have some sunshine in between the rain, which made everything look fresh and sparkly.
The scenery is absolutely beautiful and one can go for long or short walks and breath in some fresh air. We could see why Karen and Clive enjoy living where they do but once again it was time to move on and we were sorry to leave them behind, but more adventure awaited us. London is calling!
P.S. There is a distinct lack of photos for this blog, so let me explain. Before I started writing the blog for our U.K. & Europe trip I needed to find the photographs to refresh my memory a bit about our trip and to post some photos as well. WELL! I searched high and low, for days on end in our house, through all our millions of other photographs (and there are literally millions!) that are packed away in various cupboards in our house and I couldn’t find them. Eventually Paul found an album with some of the photos and voila! But I can still picture other photos that we took during this trip and they haven’t surfaced yet, so if and when I do find them I will post some more.
