Well, it's been some time since I last put finger to keyboard in anger and now it's time for that to change. For one reason or another, I haven't seen some of you in a long, long while. Maybe it's because we live on different continents or we've inexplicably lost touch in this modern communication age. Maybe it's because we've changed addresses, lifestyles, phones and friends. Maybe we've just changed? Anyway, here's an almost chronological update of what's gone on in the previous sixteen months since I returned from my Latin American adventure... I arrived back at Heathrow - that giant shopping mall/high security prison with an airport attached - tired of international travel and still quite ill from the mysterious Guatemalan/Colombian stomach bug that had did for my insides what Chernobyl Power Plant had did ... read more

Writing exams can be such a stressful and 'mood-modifying' experience! As expected, after finishing our last exams (Phew!), friends and I decided to have a day out in Swansea (about 50 min by train - very fast train, by the way!) This, I was told, is supposed to be a place for relaxation, fresh air, less traffic, nice people, rejuvenation, exotic landscapes and reflection. Needless to say, it became our first choice to unwind and reflect upon a very long and energy-draining academic year... Usually at this time of the year here, the weather should be pretty warm (X fingers) - so we had planned a couple of activities there, but instead it decided to be cloudy and overcast! Clearly, it wasn't gonna be a pleasant outing for us. However, we decided to go... We missed ... read more

Our last day in London we went and saw the musical Evita which was good and which we really enjoyed. Although nothing can compare to Equus. We almost went to the stage door on our last night in London to talk to the actors because we still couldn't stop thinking about the show but then we found a Canadian pub and stayed there instead. We even convinced the pub owners to switch the t.v. from a soccer station to a hockey one with our Canadian charm. On the 9th we took the train from London to Bath for a couple hours before continuing on to Swansea. Bath is the picturesque village famed for it's hot springs and used by early pagan Britons and then converted by the Romans into baths. We stumbled around in sheer ... read more

After a few months of working we decided that it was time to get out and about so Triona and I along with some of our workmates headed down to the Gower Peninsula a national park area about an hours drive from Cardiff. We spent the day here and it was really nice although I think in Australia we are spoilt for beaches. ... read more

Four years in Swansea…quite a large chunk of my life! Needless to say leaving it all was quite sad. For a ‘pretty shity city’ i've had some rather excellent times. So goodbye Mary Williams and JCs and Time, and Jitsu and Discovery, and the beach and the park and the bbqs and the housecrawls. (but I’m sure I’ll be back to visit). Anyhoo I celebrated my leaving in the conventional fashion: gathering together my friends, and getting drunk with them all! Friday 30th June was my Housing Options Leaving do. We went for a few drinks and curly fries down Wind St, and a jolly good time was had by all. The next weekend I had a party at my lovely little student house on St Helens Avenue; bbqed meat, kitchen limbo, and shots of disgusting ... read more

The first real test of the man/bike/trailer machine was passed successfully last week, with all three of us covering the 70 odd kilometres between Swansea and Cilycwm, the site of the Small nations festival in the encouraging time of 3 hours 45 minutes (and one second). The only two problems I noticed were the tendency of the clamp attaching the trailer to the frame of the bike to slip and the bulging sides of the full to the brim trailer rubbing against the trailer's tyres. The first has been resolved with the help of the resourceful Paul from Schmoos in Swansea, who suggested attaching a piece of tyre rubber to the frame with cable ties, providing an attachment point for the trailer; the second was temporarily fixed by a visit to a garden centre en-route to ... read more

Since it is my birthday, I have decided to treat myself (and you) to the delights of tight fitting clothing. The get-up you see me in in these photos is what I will be wearing for the cycle ride. I have a dark blue top as well, but all my shorts are tight, black lycra. I took the trailer for a test run to Lidls yesterday, to stock up on cycling essentials like cheap red wine and dried fruit. In the course of a 10 minute journey I got two "Gis a lift, mate" shouted at me. I replied, "sure pal, hop in" both times. Unfortunately, this lacks wit, so I will gratefully receive any suggestions as to what I can shout back to the roadside gisalifters. Short, sharp and pithy ideally, I won't have time ... read more

Now the weather has got back on track in proper summer style, me and the old girl are enjoying the ups and downs that Swansea has to offer. Yesterday we took a trip up to Dunvant, which involved a couple of steep, battery acid in the leg inducing climbs, followed by the joy of free wheeling down to the front, overtaking cars all the way. Then along to the Mumbles, before taking on the slow and steady climb up to Newton, where I stopped off for much needed liquid intake at Auntie Chris' hill top residence. And so finally to JCS, the uni bar, to enjoy a hard earned pint. A big up to the hard working staff of JCS, for their tireless efforts to provide the student hordes with veritable lakes of booze, all provided ... read more

Welcome to my first blog. These pages will be a way for anyone with an interest in my leg-powered jaunt through the British Isles to keep up with the preparations and eventually the main event itself. I will be raising money for CICRA - Crohn's in Childhood Research Association. I am taking my bike, plus a trailer containing everything I need for my journey except food and water. The journey begins from John O'Groats and leads through Scotland and the Lake District to Lancaster, then on a ferry to Douglas, around the TT circuit back to Douglas before heading to Belfast from where I will Zig and Zag through Ireland via Dublin, Galway and Cork. Once at Cork it is a ferry ride back across the Irish Sea to Swansea, for my triumphal homecoming, when the ... read more
