My best friend went to London for her senior trip in high school, and I was always so jealous. Most of my family has been to parts of Europe, so it was only destiny that when the opportunity arose for me to travel overseas I got pretty excited. Swansea, Wales – although not actually located in Europe. A ten day trip, with two days in London! At first, I wasn’t going to go because I didn’t see how it would apply to my curriculum and because it was over spring break I would have to miss a week of work. But a good friend, Megan, who also went on the trip, was able to talk me into it. I went to the first meeting and decided I had to go. Not only was I going to ... read more

Going to another country is something I’ve always wanted to do, but the timing was never right…that is until this semester. I had the amazing opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom over my spring break to both work and play. We have an amazing mass communication program at the University of Central Oklahoma so why not spread the magic overseas? Ten students and two of our professors made up the entire group. Before the actual trip, us students were split into two different groups who were each assigned a non-profit organization located in Swansea, Wales. My group was assigned the Swansea Youth Single Homeless Project, also known as “SYSHP.” It’s an organization that takes in the youth of Swansea who are homeless for whatever reasons and helps them get back on their feet by providing ... read more

Også her kan vandreturer anbefales. I London sydet det av folk, nesten litt ... read more

We arrived at the London Heathrow Air-Port around 5 in the morning and I was exhausted. I was wide awake the entire time on the flight. After we landed, we got our baggage, and we where on our way through customs. It was actually a pretty easy process, I was surprised. After we went through customs we had a mini bus that would take us to Wales. It was a 3 hour bus ride from London to Wales. I had a nice little power nap during the bus ride. We finally arrived in Wales. During our drive into Wales, I seen a handful of fish and chip eateries. Everyone back in the states were telling how fish and chips is a popular dish in the U.K.. We finally arrived at our destination, the "Norton House" . ... read more

01/04/2011 - Hannah and I planned a short break to South-West Wales for a few reasons. The main one being to train for our upcoming Charity Challenge trip to Machu Picchu in Peru. However Hannah had won 2 nights’ accommodation at any Village hotel in the country so we decided to use it in Swansea and have a day hiking in nearby Brecon Beacons National Park. We drove what normally would be a stress free 3 hour drive to Swansea, but as a result of constant roadwork’s and accidents on the dreaded M4 it took us almost 6 hours to reach our hotel. When we arrived it wasn’t long before we fell asleep, the long drive alone was exhausting. 02/04/2011 – We were in no real rush this morning to get hiking but after getting ourselves ... read more

MARCH 17th 2011 Today we finished up doing our interviews, and wrapping up all of our work for Discovery. A few of us went out to celebrate St. Patty's Day at a place called Odyssey. There was a huge green foam party! Foam was raining down from the cieling, and we all got soaked. This was by far the highlight of my trip. I added a photo of Gary and Hunter post foam picture. I also found a video of the festivities on Youtube (The link is in this entry). Somewhere in this mass of people, I am getting covered in GREEN FOAM:) ... read more

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY! But not in Wales. We soon discovered that St. Patty's Day isn't a very popular holiday in Wales. It deeply saddened me. Again team SYSHP got to sleep in and not rush to be anywhere. We took our time to get ready and then we all loaded the bus and ventured down to the City Centre where we shot b-roll for our client's video. Eliot, our Swansea U student ambassador, met us there to have lunch and chat with us one last time before we had to leave. After lunch Eliot led us back to our client's headquarters and saved us from having to pay a taxi again. We shot our last interviews of these two girls that have been out of SYSHP for quite some time, but love to come back ... read more

Well put your green on people because today is St Patricks Day. Our final shoot in Swansea went well and according to plan. Every person we interviewed had an interesting story. After we wrapped up the interviews, we said our goodbyes to our Swansea clients and we headed back to our rooms. The best thing about shooting in Wales is how you meet so many new people, and the fascinating stories about their life. Later on that night everyone headed out to the local night spots to relax. We ended up at Club Odyssey to celebrate St Patricks Day and they were having a huge foam party. As soon as I walked in the club, everyone's eyes was on me. Everyone knew I was an American because of they way I dressed, and my body size. ... read more

Happy St. Patrick's Day! at least in the U.S. here not so much. . The Welsh celebrate St. Davids Day which is celebrated on the first of March. Today our group went back to the City Central to shoot b-roll for our video and met Eliot, our Swansea U student ambasador, for lunch. Finally got some fish and chips and they were GREAT! Long John Silver's has got nothing on Wales! After lunch Eliot showed us how to get back to our clients headquarters and we shot our last interviews. We walked allll the way back to the City Central and did a little window shopping at the mall there. We grabbed a cab once we were done and went back to the hotel where we met up with our other group to go get ice ... read more

Today we saw more then we had planned. Dare I say this was our most miserable day here in the UK, but it didn't start that way. The day started out great. We took a cab from the hotel to our organization's headquarters so there was no way we would get lost. We got to meet more of the kids in SYSHP and were able to see the hostel that they stay in. The broadcast students shot the interviews and Nicole and I took a couple of girls aside to do our own interviews. It was phenomenal experience. These girls have been through so much to be so young. It was heart warming. I just wanted to help them. Afterwards we went to the City Centre to eat lunch. A few of us went to McDonalds. ... read more
