08 June 2018 A Neolithic day!
We said our goodbyes to Everard and Eileen after a very pleasant stay and spent the day visiting five sites on mainland Orkney all of which are about 5,000 years old and located surprisingly close to each other.
We started with a guided trip to Maeshowe, a large and well preserved burial chamber constructed of large slabs of sandstone and surrounded by a mound. This was followed by another smaller, but much quieter tomb, Unstan Chambered Cairn.
After lunch it was standing stones. First a trip by a ranger around the 104m diameter henge of the Ring of Brodgar followed by the huge Stones of Steness.
To finish we drove to the west coast to see the village of Skara Brae and stayed the night in the nearby carpark at Skaill Bay.
