How can you be at Scotland and not have whiskey? Having a whale of a time in Scotland. The men here are so friendly and nice and just about every other guy in the pub will give you a big wink. Not sure what its supposed to mean though.

Its just about 7 pm in the evening and the bar is crowded. I feel bad for the two bartenders - just teenagers - continuously filling glasses that get drained every few minutes. They really earn their money. And tipping heavily does not seem to be a culture here. Most people tend exact change. Not that I mind following suit simply bcoz I'm on a budget trip and yes, being in Europe is expensive.

Anyway, the conversation as usual is about good scotch and Glengoyne is recommended as a lovely place to spend the day and have a close look at the whiskey making process.

So, the next day, early morning we head from Glasgow towards the Glengoyne distillery. Glengoyne Distillery is situated on the A81 (main route to Aberfoyle) and is between the villages of Strathblane and Killearn. Its open all year round for a guided distillery tour.

On the way to the bar

As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed with a dram of Single Highland Malt and its supposed to have won some award. Tasted wonderful, so I'm assuming the award bit is true.

We were all seated in the room that overlooked a waterfall and the glen - and its gorgeous. While we sipped on the Single Malt, we were given a theoretical session on whiskey making and how the water and weather in Scotland helps them brew this wonderful manna.

Post the session, we were all taken to the Sample room where the walls are lined with an array of sample bottles containing whiskies at different stages of maturation from hundreds of Glengoyne casks. From there we went on to the main factory where they made the whiskey. Well, all I could smell was the yeast formation and I was glad when it ended and we went to the Whisky Shop.

The shop is done up beautifully with windows displaying whiskey flasks and oak barrels. We also got excellent personalized service while buying the whiskey. Now looking forward to being at home and sipping on the Glengoyne 17 year old Single Highland Malt whisky when all
