Without really planning it I managed to have a massive week and a bit of music...
Glastonbury 26-29th June
The morning after Wimbledon I caught the train down to Jason and Kirstyn and we took off in the newly revamped Clancy to the Glastonbury Festival. The last 10 miles of the journey took as long as the rest thanks to a fire in a factory that shut down one of the major roads in but we eventually got our tickets and found the campsite where we put up my tent in the rain and had some dinner. The weather was not looking promising…
Friday morning we loaded up with beers and snacks and headed down to the festival. It is such a massive place with hundreds of little stages, stalls and random roaming acts. It rained on and off all day turning the place into a mud bath and we were very glad we all had wellies. There were abandoned shoe graveyards next to all of the wellie stalls around the place! We walked miles around the site checking out a few bands including one with a very cool name - ‘Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.’ We hiked
back up the hill to the van to restock and get some dinner before finishing off the night. After the main stages shut we pushed along with the crowd to Trash City which was pumping and packed with people. We wandered around soaking it all up for a bit before heading back to bed.
Saturday the weather cleared up although it was still muddy in places. We did a lot less walking today and spent most of our time at the main stages, chilling out on the hill on a blanket. We went back to the van again for dinner before watching Amy Winehouse make an absolute shambles of her set. At one point she seemed to forget how to sing and she finished off by punching someone in the crowd. Take heed children… drugs are bad! We stayed on for Jay-Z out of curiosity and he was pretty entertaining, even for someone who’s not a huge rap fan. We ended the night in a random circus tent watching a fire-twirling show.
Sunday was mostly dry again and the whole place had dried out which was good. We checked out some of the performance areas and went up
to the stone circle and Tipi area which was cool. We got a great view of the whole festival and the sea of tents. We chilled out on the hill for most of the afternoon and really enjoyed singing along to Neil Diamond! We ended the night dancing along to Groove Armada and checked out a few stalls on our way home.
The drive back was much less traumatic and we made good time. I became very aware of my lack of showers for 4 days on the train home and enjoyed a long bath when I got home.
Jack Johnson 2nd July
The next Wednesday afternoon I finished work a bit early and headed to Hyde Park to see Jack Johnson. I won tickets in a competition and took Fiona along. We were both very excited to learn that we’d get to go backstage and watch the concert from the side of the stage! We wandered around for a bit and then settled in to watch Ben Harper (we’re both huge fans). After Ben we headed backstage and then on to the stage which was amazing. Jack put on a great show and at the end
we were hanging out to see him sing with Ben, which he did after singing with everyone else on the bill as well as Jimmy Buffet. Floated off the stage afterwards with lots of photos and big smiles on our faces!
O2 Festival 6th July
I finished off my massive music experience back at Hyde Park on Sunday for the O2 festival. The weather wasn’t quite as good as on Wednesday and it rained on and off so my emergency poncho came in handy. I checked out a band in one of the back tents early on before settling in at the main stage to watch Powderfinger, Ben Harper (again) and Counting Crows. Powderfinger were awesome, Ben wasn’t as good as on Wednesday and Counting Crows were pretty good as well so I enjoyed myself despite the weather. I thought I’d be all music’ed out by the end of the week but I could keep going to concerts forever I think!
