It was our last week in the UK for long time, so we said our last goodbyes to my family (you’ll all be missed whilst we’re away…). The last big job (and challenge!) was to sell the tired old Astra, which after having been used as a dump truck for many a trip to the tip was looking a bit worse for the wear... We decided to take it to a local valet place that managed to bring it back to its original colour, making it look like we actually looked after it. And we were surprised to find it was actually supposed to be RED! Selling it wasn’t too hard after that. Well, taking a few photos and sticking them on Autotrader was easy, it’s thanks to dad for doing all the hard work of dealing with the buyers including taking the first call at an obscenely early time (8am).
A taste of things to come was later provided by Aunty Barbara & Uncle Louis, who gave us an extended slide show of their recent trip to New Zealand. The scenery from the South Island looked absolutely amazing (apart from all the photos of flowers … “NEXT!!!” eh, Louis?)
and proved that they didn’t use special effects to get all the stunning scenes in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Thanks for the dinner and insightful tips!
After this came a little trip down memory lane as we joined mum and dad and big sis in Southport for a firework spectacular. In case you don’t know/remember, Southport is where we both met so it was a fitting place to visit only 3 days after our 3rd anniversary…
Following the fireworks, we joined Uncle Peter and Aunty Regina for a delicious home made curry and yet more invaluable travelling tips, the evening being so enjoyable and the conversation about life, the universe and everything so engrossing we ended up arriving in Blackpool at pub closing time.
Maria had never been to Blackpool (unforgivable after 9 years in the UK!) and I’d not been for many, many years, so we decided it was one of those “must do things” before we said goodbye to Good ‘Ol Blighty. After arriving late to see the lights, we spent the next day on Blackpool Pleasure Beach enjoying the rides. It was quite a shock to me to arrive at the main entrance and find that all the ticket prices had dramatically changed in the last few years. The “Pepsi Max Big One” now costs £9 for each ride, meaning you really have to buy the all-day arm band (£30) to make it worthwhile. Not surprisingly the place was almost empty.
It was also a surprise to find that my cast iron stomach has taken a turn for the worst and it wasn’t just Maria feeling ill after each ride. So we spent a lot of time playing on the stalls around the Pleasure Beach to give ourselves time to recover, which also meant we won a few cuddly toys (mostly because we played games where we only competed against each other!).
Mum and dad gave us a much appreciated lift to the airport a few days later and after an emotional farewell (for me) we used the first of our pre-booked OneWorld air-tickets and flew out to Madrid.
