We left Reeth at 8.45 and followed the path through a series of fields and pastures, complete with narrow pinch stiles and tiny gates perched atop the walls – uniquely Yorkshire. These bring you to the road at Marrick Abbey (hidden amongst newer buildings) and the charming ascent through Steps Wood accompanied by the scent of wild garlic. Once up the top, it was our highest ascent for the day, at around 300m. From there we continued through paddocks, past cattle and sheep, where Nick, Euan, David & Mitch educated Simon on the assets of each breed. We reached Richmond 3 1/2 hrs later, minus Kerryn, who had taken a scenic route. Coffee and lunch, then a walk around the pretty town. Dinner at the French restaurant.

18km
