I had a few days rest, watched Sunderland's last game of the season v Swansea caught the train back to Wootton Bassett, saw my family and then caught the train back up yesterday. I then checked back into the Roker Hotel and got a late ticket to see ''Warhorse'' at the Sunderland Empire - a great old theatre and the play was great. My room in the Roker Hotel was huge and looked straight out across the North Sea which today was calm and blue and everything was good with the world. After breakfast I collected my bike which I had left here and then by about 10am I was heading north from Sunderland along the cycle route that goes along the coast to Newcastle and cuts in through Newcastle into the very empty county that ... read more

Leaving the Old Post House behind with their 1000 tea pots (just outside of Cockermouth, this pub was again booked through www.britstops.com, parking was fine but no other amenities to use, food was a bit pricey averaging £15.00 GBP a meal – we cooked in the van), we aimed Georgie in the direction of Carlisle. Woolly says – I was looking forward to this as Carlisle Castle is in my I Spy Ancient Britain book! We seemed to have left the small fields of the Lakes with their dry stone walls behind us and instead we passed through much larger fields with undulating landscapes, pretty in its own way but not so jaw dropping. Parking Georgie was dead easy at the castle and we had a short walk to the front of the building it find ... read more

It is often said that a picture tells a thousand words, but a picture of the stars from the top of a hill in Kielder tells you absolutely nothing. Unless complete blackness tells you something. The light from some of those stars has travelled for billions of years to reach us, but only a select few would see it, and only a special kind of camera would be able to preserve it. As good as our digital cameras are, we didn’t have that special kind of camera, so the night became one of those rare nights when you really did have to be there. Once back in the car, it seemed a shame to turn the lights on after spending so long avoiding light to make the most of the view, but not turning the lights ... read more

In the beginning there was darkness. It was the middle of the night and the moon was new, so what else did I expect? Dark as it was though, I could still see everything in my bedroom, the shape of the wall, the retro fireplace, even my feet, sticking out as they were from the end of the duvet to keep me cool on a particularly stuffy night. My curtains are thick enough to pretty much block out everything from the outside, but having a streetlight directly opposite meant that even the best curtains will let an orangey-glow in around the edges. I took a look at my watch and realised I had only been asleep for an hour, so rather than sit wondering about the marvels of sodium vapour fluorescent lighting, I turned over and ... read more

Kielder Observatory looked nothing like I expected it to. Having never been to an observatory in my life before, I expected all observatories to be huge Plexiglas domes with an even bigger telescope sticking out of the top. I have no idea where this vision came from, probably a cartoon from the eighties where the end of the telescope is an enormous distorted eye keeping a lookout at the locals down in Kielder rather than up in the skies, but it couldn’t have been more wrong. Maybe it was because we were in Hadrian’s Wall country, maybe it was designed like that, or maybe I just couldn’t think of a better analogy, but Kielder Observatory looks slightly like a Roman fort. A pre-Hadrianic fort if we’re being picky, because it was made entirely of wood in ... read more
