After a respite with limited to no internet access, I am able to update you all on the past weeks' activities. I write from a rather lovely, if ever so slightly isolated, section of the Yorkshire dales. Myself, Abbie, Brooke and Ric are staying with Ric's sister very near Pately Bridge, home of England's oldest sweetshop, lapwings, and thanks to us, at least one dead rabbit (run over rather fatefully by our zippy little Renault hire car). In the last week much has occurred. This said the best of it, somewhat predictably, involves me drinking much wine, getting some sleep for once, and generally living life at a pace less hectic than that of Bangkok. Whilst obviously never regretting a trip to Thailand, England (and Wales) have acted much like Wayne Rooney's personal oxygen tent, speeding ... read more

I started at the mammoth cathedral then walked through tourist packed, tiny medieval alleyways. I stopped in a very colorful pub, reminiscent of Amsterdam's cafes, to use the internet before walking the walls. Could have been here longer than the hour I was. But since it was a short stay there isn't much else to say. ... read more

This entry is intended to list exactly what I took with me on my trip, together with comments about each item. This includes things I bought along the way, as well as items I discarded. It's a testament to the accuracy of the various packing-related websites that I consulted that the things I took with me tallied almost exactly with the things that I needed, with few redundant or omitted items, meaning my rucksack was light (9.8 kg at the beginning) and there were no crisis moments due to not having some critical item. Essentials Passport (containing Indian visa) - got my visa via The Visa Service in London, for which I had to fill in a couple of forms from online then send them my passport by post. They charged just under 75 quid (30 ... read more

York Minster Interior York's magnificent cathedral (called the Minster) is the latest in a succession of churches that have occupied the Northwest corner of this walled town since Roman days. (The Roman basilica's foundation can still be seen in the present Minster's crypt/undercroft/cellar). Most of these churches burnt down; fire has destroyed many sections of the present building as well--but fortunately not all at once. The feisty Yorkists have restored the burnt areas each time, sometimes after long delays. Before the fires, much of the interior decorations and tombs were removed by Protestants trying to purge their churches (both literally and figuratively) of Catholic trappings. Up early again to catch the 0900 train to York for a days sightseeing. The weather was again lousy although the rain was only light and scattered. York is amongst the most beautiful cities I have ever visited in Britain. It is an old walled city with most of the buzz centered around York Minster, a huge cathedral on the northern side of town. We dropped into the Visitor Information Centre to get brochures and arrived at the Minster just in time for a guided tour that lasted about an hour and a half. York Minster is built in medieval style over the top of an old Norman cathedral which - in turn - was built over a Roman settlement. In the crypt below we took an audio tour that demonstrated the different layers and evolutions ... read more

Christine's B-Day just passed and Gem & Gee organised a surprise trip for us to take her to York. It was quite amusing because everytime a sign was coming up on the motorway, we would cover Christine's eyes. It also helped that Christine is practically blind!!! There were 7 girls in total so it was a good ride upto York! A bit of singing, reading & knitting in the backseats. The trip took fairly long, but it worth the wait when we got there!!! Walking to the Shambles area, it so reminded me of Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter movies! I wanted to find Owl's in cages for sale and broomsticks flying in the air, just a bit of wishful thinking!!! I found the town very warm and I loved the outside detailing and how the ... read more

Danby is a great destination for anyone wondering where to go in the North York Moors. There is some great scenery and Danby is easily accessed on the Esk Valley railway running between Middlesbrough and Whitby. This blog is from my home territory, Yorkshire, in the north of England. I thought I’d put in some of the more interesting trips I make before my next trip abroad. For some work I am doing, I have to get some pictures in the North York Moors National Park, so I took the opportunity of good weather to get the train up to the Moors, in north east Yorkshire. However, with the bus running late, it looked as if we had missed our train in Leeds, so I got a ticket to Malton (a different destination). Then suddenly the ... read more

What a tiresome day. For reasons too tedious to relate in full, I'm going to be stuck in the UK for another 2.5 weeks. In short, British Midland cancelled my flight to London, and there was no subsequent flight that would get me to London in time for my connection. And because my Virgin flight to Delhi was bought using airmiles, Virgin would only allow me to swap to another flight with an available "airmiles" seat - the next available one of which isn't until 17th November. This post was originally twice as long, but I have just removed all the obscenities.... read more

Today, about 60 people were killed and over 200 injured in 3 explosions in New Delhi. It seems likely that a terrorist group associated with the conflict in Kashmir is to blame. One of the explosions occurred in Paharganj, where there is a popular market as well as a large number of hotels and cafes catering to the backpacker community. Crowds of people were browsing the many market stalls, buying devotional items in preparation for two upcoming major Hindu and Muslim festivals. The hotel for my first 4 nights in India is in the Paharganj area. Following the principle of lightning not striking twice, I'm inclined not to be worried about this. I'm sure the atmosphere of the area, if not the city, will be different though.... read more
