So, mini-backpacking trip set to start at 8am in London heading to Liverpool. That didn't happen though.
As usual, disorganised me left the tickets to be print out in the last minute, but just so happened that the printer was outta black ink and wouldn't print the bar code!! So I thought to myself..."well, it's London, I'll just go to the station a bit earlier and find a net cafe where I can print it". Yeah...not really. As I was leaving the house, I have no idea what happened, but the alarm wasn't working and I had to turn it on cause I was gonna be away for 10 days...and it's London! But anyways...I did something and still wasn't sure if it was on, but left anyway...to find out the tube wasn't working properly (nothing new about that) so I ended up being way too late, got off in High St Kensington and went to Mc Donalds to use the net to buy a new ticket to Liverpool.
I was supposed to have arrived there at 1pm, but ended up leaving here then and didn't arrive til 6pm. And right at the station, the first people
I met were...BRAZILIANS!
I was couch surfing (1st time!!) and the girl I was gonna stay with there was a total sweetheart and went to the trouble of going all the way to the station to pick me up! We went back home, chatted a bit, then went to the movies to watch The Last King of Scotland...you know what?! Great movie, very impressive, really makes you think, but SO SICK!!
So 1st night in Liverpool was pretty relaxing (apart from the choice of movie)...then the next day started earlier as my hostess, Kirsty, had to go to work before 9.
I started walking towards the docks, which were pretty close, so walked along the Riverwalk, checked out the pretty view of the Irish Sea and got to the Albert Docks...I don't really know what to say about it, it was so different than what I'm used to see! Quite pretty..stop for a Starbucks and all that, then walked around the city observing everything and everyone...then Culture Quarter.
There's the library, an art gallery, a museum (forgot which one!!) and the World Museum, where I went to and spent a couple of
hours in the world history sessions.
After that, I thought I'd find a net cafe (very hard to find!!) to check out the addresses of the Beatles' sights cause I had the "brilliant" idea of going by myself...
I looked up the addresses then checked them on the map and it seemed quite alright to walk there...big mistake. Two hours later, there I am walking past Penny Lane and the Sgt Pepper Bistro then, a while later, in front of John Lennon's childhood home. You can usually go in, but only with a tour (from March-Oct :/ )...and, from Penny Lane, right before Lennon's home you got Beaconsfield Rd, where the Strawberry Field is. But since it took me so long to get there (not to mention the very dodgy parts of the town I walked through), it was dark already and I couldn't see much apart from what you also can see on the pic.
As I crossed the street to look for Paul McCartney's childhood home, I approached a man for information and he very kindly helped me locate it on the map he had. Thing is...when I was looking up the
address on the map online, it wouldn't find Forthlin Rd, only Forthlin Drive and that's where I was heading to! But since the man had the A to Z, I thought I'd check for both and DID find Forthlin Rd, which was the opposite direction!! So I got the directions and the man walked along with me through part of the way as he was working in the area...
I kinda forgot the name of the last street where I had to turn, but turned on the right one...I thought I was lost and going the wrong way, so stopped another man to ask for directions and he was so helpful!! He took me all the way to Paul's house and when we passed the bus stop nearby he asked if I was gonna take the bus back to tell me which one to take!
People outside London are so much nicer and friendly! Actually, English people are really helpful and polite...they just have a bad reputation because of London people...and they are not even English!
Anyways...took the bus, got off in the city centre and went back home...was gonna have an early start
the next day on my way to Manchester.
ps: some of the pics are kinda weird, I know...but I have no idea why! They get like that everytime I wanna post them here, on my fotolog, Orkut or MySpace, buton my
album they're normal.
