Today is our flight from London Heathrow to Hong Kong. Our departure is at 10.30 pm so we have all day with Wally and Maureen. We planned with them to see Peter’s cousins Robert and Julie at their house. Robert was unable to make it but Julie came along with her husband Matt, and sons Jack and George. Their daughter Holly was unable to make it as she is studying for her GCSEs this summer. It’s been twelve years since we have seen them and it was really good to catch up. They stayed for about three hours and had to go home as Jack had to start work at about 5 pm. After they left we went into Basingstoke and had some lunch and then went to Tesco to do bit of final shopping in ... read more

Today is our last full day in the UK before we fly off to our holiday in sun in Malta. We did get away a bit later than we anticipated as we weren’t sure what the traffic was going to be like. Being the last day of a long weekend we expected the traffic to be a lot heavier than what we encountered. We said our farewells to Robin and Jean and Kelly also came to see us off. The trip down the M1 to London was uneventful and we arrived at Wally and Maureen’s in the late afternoon. Three of us went to the local supermarket while Wally went to the pub, where I joined him a little later. We had a lovely dinner and Gina then got everything packed ready for the flight the ... read more

Thursday 16.04.09 Cuenca is a lovely city: though it has nearly half a million of a population it has a quiet hstoric feel about it; with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture, people are polite, friendly and are not rushed - I felt a lot safer there than in many of the other cosmopolitan cities. The only drawback was the weather; it was cold and rainy! An early start for my last day in Ecuador and packing took a little longer than usual. The bus to Guayaquil was leaving at 11:30 so I had time to visit the Museo de Banco Central Pumapungo not far from the river. There I saw one of the best exhibitions of indigenous cultural history of Equador: the displays were particularly interesting with a wide variety of artefacts well documented in ... read more

February '09 It's just over a year since I completed the first stage of my South American travels. So, before I start round two, some reflections on the first trip may influence the way I tackle this forthcoming venture. The script on the blog from my first trip encapsulated my first impressions rapidly typed up in a variety of internet cafes and enhanced with a selection of photographs which were often difficult to upload. The idiosyncrasies of the internet systems throughout the countries visited and their volatile reliability often resulted in frustration. However there were very few total failures and technology triumphed in the end. I would be happy to revisit any of the countries travelled. I found a welcoming friendly atmosphere wherever I went and the hospitality I received was in many cases overwhelming. Apart ... read more

Well....it's all over. What can I say? This will be my last entry on this blog - it's been almost 8 months and what an amazing time I've had! I've done many things I only ever dreamed of - skydiving, holding a koala, seeing Uluru at sunset. I've made some of the best friends I could ever hope to have, met some amazing people, and I've found that I have something in common with practically everyone I've met. There have been ups, downs, crazy times and times where I've thought "What am I doing?!". But it's all been worth it, and I wouldn't change a thing. It was sad saying goodbye - the end of an era. It's been carefree. I've learned so much about who I am, I've changed the way I think, and hopefully ... read more

Ok, so the first entry on my blog, which my younger sister lovingly called "a bit self-centered" this afternoon, but figure if you are interested in what im doing, and how many Arsenal fans I meet, then carry on!! I leave early tomorrow (23rd), and my first stop is St. Petersburg, very excited as you can imagine!! I will try and keep this updated as often as possible, but obviously when I have a 4 day train journey across Russia, then gaps will appear. Anyway, got stuff to do, so I will look forward to some abuse on facebook, some banter when i get home, and booze with that too ;) Much love xxxxxxxx... read more
