London, England
I got up at 6:30 a.m. and began to sort through my things again to have a bag ready to take to the Laundromat when I got back after my Regal London tour this morning. I ate and then went downstairs to find rain!!! Remember I keep my curtains closed due to the dismal view, and I had not noticed it while in the dining room. It was already stopping, so it was nice and cool most of the morning. I met 2 women from Vancouver, Canada who are also on the same 26 day tour as me whole waiting for the morning tour. We chatted a bit then we went on a tour of looking left and right at many places that I have already seen. After two hours, we finally made it to Westminster Abbey. I informed the tour director that I was heading off on my own. I visited Westminster Abbey for about an hour and a half. Lots of beautiful stain glass windows that were made in the 40's and 50's. This was due to the windows being blown out by the bombs during the WWII Blitz. The patterns match what was
on record from the originals. Saw the resting place of many kings and queens including Queen Elizabeth I and her half sister Queen Mary. Many poets and novelists are buried there also. Unfortunately, no pictures are allowed inside, but an area in the courtyard was allowed. After leaving Westminster Abbey I headed to the Houses of Parliament to take an hour tour of it. But it was closed for the day to only group tours and special individual tours. I will have to try to see it when I get back to London in July. It was 11:30 a.m., and since I was across the street from the restaurant that had that wonderful Shepherd's pie, I went there to eat until just before noon. I was able to video Big Ben at noon chiming the hour. I then caught the 159 city bus to Marble Arch. I shopped at Evans and tried on some the tops, but at £ 25-30 ($40-50), I passed. I did pick up some knickers (undies) £ 6 ($9.00) for a package of 3. I got to the hotel, and grabbed the laundry and headed to the Laundromat which was 1 block right, 1 block left,
and 2 blocks right away. It was a small Laundromat on the end of a block. There was no change machine and the soap vending machine was out of order. I went back outside preparing to go across the street to get change when a man walked up to me with his hand out. He said, “Change.” I thought he was begging, and I said no. He then said, “No, I give you change.” I apologized and we laughed it off. I sat a smoothie shop two doors down while it took about 2 hours to get one load washed and dried. I tried the low setting and my clothes were still wet to the touch, so I set it on high. A couple from Seattle was also doing their laundry. We chatted a bit, then I went back to blogging. After getting back to the hotel about 5 pm, I grabbed my netbook and headed for the McDonald's down the street to eat my dinner and use the free Wi-fi they offer. After I am done here, I am going back to the room to get ready for bed and tomorrow's trip around Great Britain and Ireland. London has
been fun and adventuresome! The people I have spoken to have been very friendly and helpful. Great bunch of citizens!
