Today, we encountered the natural and cultural dimensions of Inle Lake—its diverse ecosystems and traditional lifestyles of the Intha people who have lived here for centuries. Around the lake, markets are held in different villages on a rotating schedule, and we visited one of these colorful sites of commerce frequented by Shan, Pa-O and Burmese people.
Inle Lake is also known as "Venice of the East". We explored the series of canals via the longboats. Experiencing life on the lake from a local perspective, we went to a Buddist Pagoda, and had an authentic Myanmar lunch at a converted home along the canals. This afternoon we observed the other key traditional livelihood on the lake—fishing. We saw fishing using several of the unique local fishing methods.
