Our last stop on this journey was London. Yes we are all tired, a bit icon fatigued and almost ready to go home.As in Paris we had our own flat for the week, near Russell Square and also near the Royal National Hotel where I first stayed in London 25 years ago.

Also as with Paris I gained most enjoyment out of what was happening outside of the main tourist attractions. Our first afternoon was sunny and warm so we took the opportunity for the London Eye. Yes it is inextricably touristy and contrived but was also surprisingly fun with those we shared the cabin all in good spirits. The real highlights of the afternoon were the kids play area, the street performers and the Christmas market along the Thames.

I enjoyed the days walking the streets especially around Covent Garden and just taking in the busyness and the sparkling Christmas decorations in all the streets and squares. Seeing how Londoners celebrate Christmas through huge fairs such as Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park (a favourite with the kids) and all the ice-skating rinks popping up alongside the major tourist attractions. All of these outside activities in the freezing cold is so exciting and really puts Sydney’s effort to shame
