Quaint city of Bath
Amazing architecture
A stop in Lacock.
Pretty easy going day today since I went from London to Bath when I was on the “Full Monty” tour up to Scotland a few weeks ago. We had a NOON time start but had to check out by 10AM. So today we basically drove from Bath to the town of Lacock which is less than 30 minutes away. Not an awful lot to see but there was a church there that was the church used in the TV version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. There were some cute buildings in town but not much else to see.
Silly me, I sort of jumped ahead. I woke up about 8:30 to show up, pack up, have breakfast and then head over to the Roman Baths with Caren, Vincent and Bruno. I decided that even though entrance to the Baths is £9.50 you have to go see the Baths when you’re in Bath. Included in the entrance fee is an audio guide that you punch in the numbers and listen to the commentary. The two voices used for the audio recording, one male and one female, are really
boring and dry so more often than not I’d start listening and then get distracted. Plus some of the displays have write ups with them so it’s a bit difficult to listen to a dry and boring voice whilst trying to read at the same time. Overall the Baths were quite interesting to check out and it is amazing how huge this complex was.
From the Roman Baths we walked up to a park to check out some of the architecture since Fiona is into building development and old buildings. Plus she saw a documentary on some of these buildings a while back and wanted to see what they were like and get a compulsory picture with them to say, “I was there!”
We still had about 45 minutes before NOON so we took our time walking back towards the hostel and stopped into a few shops and then the overpriced grocery store to pick up snacks and a bite to eat for lunch.
The bus was late in picking us up so we just sat around the bar at St. Christopher’s Inn chatting, exchanging emails and eating our food purchases. Just another reminder that I really hate waiting around. Or perhaps I’ve finally come to that point in my travels where I’m getting a little burned out. I think it is partly that and partly my irritation with some of my tour mates?!?
Anyhoo, the bus came eventually. We boarded after carefully packing the coach. It is amazing how big some of the bags and suitcases some people bring for four days of travel. It is truly ridiculous! Especially since some of these people are living in London! Back to the afternoon travels back to London. I mentioned we went to Lacock. Then it was another couple of hours driving to Avebury. This is the town with the stone circles surrounding the town. We were there just over an hour and boy was I feeling groggy. Sarah and I both stopped in Avebury when our respective Full Monty tours passed through so we basically headed to the pub where Cai said she’d be. There were a bunch of picnic tables outside so it was nice to sit out in the sun knocking back a few - well, for me it was water! Hmm, nice sunny weather, that sounds like the perfect time for an ice cream. So Laura and I headed down the block and scored some really yummy Magnum ice cream bars. Now that is really nice, thick and creamy ice cream! I can taste it now! The bonus of my ice cream was not only the dark chocolate coating but the bit of chocolate truffle inside was just delectable! Sadly, I finished my ice cream in no time and it was time to head back to the bus. Mind you that meant we’d be in London in a couple of hours.
We arrived back into London about 5:30 - actually on time! I called Richard to let him know I had arrived back into London and we arranged to meet at the High Street Kensington station. Wow, the Circle line is slowly coming back into operation after the bombings of July the 7th. Twenty minutes and I was shoving my ticket into the tube exit and was soon on my way.
It was a pretty short walk to Richard’s place. I’m guessing maybe ten blocks or about a kilometer. But wasn’t really paying that close attention since we were busy talking. But do give me credit that I did notice there were only two turns that we made. Lol
Richard’s place is pretty nice even with the electrical work that is going on. Two bedrooms, huge patio, fair sized kitchen, spacious living room/dining area. All I can say is, definitely better than hostel life! I definitely don’t miss the shaky bunk beds. LOL It is so nice having a room all to myself as well…oh the luxury and the little things that make such a big difference!!!
