This map look complicated, but in reality, it is VERY easy to follow.

From Airports:
Heathrow-
Heathrow Express to Paddington Station (15 pounds)
or (I prefer)
Piccadilly Tube Line to Hathrow Terminals 1,2,3 (4 pounds)

Gatwick (usually cheaper)-
Gatwick Express to Victoria Station (7 pounds)...easiest!
or-
Overground railroad to multiple areas (4-8 pounds)

In general:
1. Taxi-
Very expensive for Americans. A taxi ride from Central to my place in Tufnell Park (20min cab ride) is about 25 pounds (50 US dollars)

2. Tube-
Fastest way to get around London. Tube Map is VERY easy to follow. 4 pounds per ride. However, if you buy an Oyster card, the tube and bus are half price. The Oyster card initially costs 3 pounds per card and can be topped up at any vendor that has the oyster symbol in the window (so easy and the ebst way to go). The tube shuts down around 12:30-1 am every night (including weekends)

3. Bus-
24 hour night bus available for most areas within zones 1 and 2. In general, the bus is a great way to get around London. I love sitting on the top deck watching everyone go about their daily business.
The bus costs 2 pounds per ride (or 1 pound with the Oyster card). Beware, if you have to take two buses to get to a location you will have to pay twice!

4. Cycling-
Biking through London is also a very fast way to get around. However, unlike Scandanavia, the streets are not tailored to bikers. So, it can be dangerous and you have to be alert at all times.
