Studios2Let in London
great location for us - easy to get to Underground and then just walk to the train ofr Gatwick Monday, Oct 29th - the calm
Up at 8 to dress and clean the apartment. Not bad team work – Pam, the owner, actually turned up just as we were finishing so I didn’t get to check how Ross did with the toilet room. All subway and train connections worked fine so I thought we’d have a lucky day. But on the train, I again had a seat travelling backwards (top speed was 331 km/hr). Kept my head down most of the time. Arrived in St. Pancras station London around 2:30. Used the phone to find our studio rental. Basement unit but all we needed – clean, well equipped, teeny tiny bathroom and a wee double bed. I did opt for the cheapest unit so no complaints. Only opened the suitcases as there was no need to unpack everything for a 2 night stay. Caught up on electronics and out to scout for dinner. Picked a pub called The Skinners Arms. Crabbie’s Ginger Beer (2) consumed as well as fish and chips and steak and ale pie. Tried the sticky toffee pudding but it was a definite miss. Walked a bit checking the neighbourhood and then off for early bed.
The Fork
finally after 1 and 3/4 weeks I got a really good coffee Tuesday, Oct 30 - the fall
Up at 8 again and thought I’d grab a quick shower. I told you it was teeny. While trying to get out of the shower my foot slipped on the slippery drain and I fell out of the shower with one leg bent between the wall and the toilet. Yelled for Ross and while he was doing a minor panic I just kept thinking I do not want 911 coming and seeing me like this. My god what a wake-up call for weight loss. Actually I have one of those wake-ups every other day. Ross couldn’t lift me because my knee was jammed near the toilet and wall so finally he got on his knees and used his leg as a wedge. I was able to then use my arms against the toilet and get up. Sore back thigh with a nice bruise and kneecaps that felt they were 45 degrees out of whack with my legs. Able to limp to the bed so I didn’t faint or throw up. After 20 minutes just breathing and doing the “what ifs” in my head and having the obligatory glass of water
standing right next to this made me cry
not sure why it grabbed me like that but what an impact it made. from Ross (his cure-all for absolutely everything) I was able to get dressed. Brilliantly we decided to walk a couple of miles to the National Museum and get breakfast on our way. Found a neat coffee shop – best coffee this whole trip and Ross was able to have porridge. Oh it was a really good coffee. Passed a demonstration at London University – we think it was about an electrical union trying to be environmentally correct. Not sure but there were about 100 demonstrators and just as many police and vehicles surrounding them. Must have been something contentious. At the museum there was a special exhibit for Courthauld’s Impressionists Collection. One painting by Van Gogh that I’d never seen just stunned me with its colours and movement and I choked up trying to tell Ross which picture to be sure and look at. Other great ones too but this just really got to me. Lunch here and then wandered around the area. Went through Covent Gardens and I sent Ross to watch the limbo guy (could limbo over nails and under fire) while I shopped in Pylones. Found the evening’s theater we were going to and then back to
the studio via Underground for a rest and quick salad supper (17, 000 steps had my feet requiring a break). Back to the theater and saw “The Play That Goes Wrong.” Worried it would be too slapstick and cheesy but it was laugh out loud funny. Glad we chose that. Another one I wanted to see was the Harry Potter play but it’s sold out completely until sometime in April. Back to pack and plan the return home.
Wednesday, Oct 31
On the plane – got my phone to actually use the WestJet app and saw a movie and now doing this. Can’t send this until later tonight. Have a great Halloween everyone- we’ll be dressed as 2 old worn out travellers lugging too much stuff. My purse can hold any chocolate trick or treats though!
