I realized that last time I didn't get to talk about my doctors appointment. Not that it is crucial you know all about it, I just thought that some Americans, which would include most of my audience, would be interested in my first experience of a socialist healtcare system. I'm not even sure if they consider themselves socialist, but they most definately are. First of all, my doctors office is Soho Square Health Centre, or something like that. It is also the national Chinese health care centre. So you can imagine my confusion when everyone, doctors, nurses, and patients were Chinese. Even the forms I was filling out had Chinese as a primary language. The nurse was coming out and calling all these strange names and for a second I thought 'what if she thinks I am chinese and calls out my name in madarin and I won't be able to understand it, so I'll sit here forever and never be called.' Then I remembered that names are names in any language, and I felt a little embarrassed that I was even worried about that. As if everyone in the office knew exactly what I was thinking.... because I think in
America is for the Birds
Pigeons sleep at the feet of George Washington Chinese. ha, no, okay I'm done with that.
I read an article in the paper about a woman who got stabbed in London by a man wearing a phantom of the opera mask. The entire situation reminds me of a Tim Burton film. You want to laugh because it is quite absurd, but at the same time it is horrific and you almost want to cry, so you end up making a face that is the mixture of both, kind of like you are about to sneeze. But in all seriousness, stabbing is a huge problem in London. I always thought gun control was a good thing, but I'm starting to think that maybe it doesn't really help, people will find other means, like knives. This summer there have been 22 deaths by stabbing. And that is only in London, and that is only teenagers. That's more then I have heard about over gunshots. But of course, I realize that I live in a city now, so there is bound to be more crime and pestulence. What is my point? Good question... some people are bad, no matter what you do.
Some people are good, like Christopher for
instance. To answer your question mama, Chris is throwing me a birthday party at his house, It's going to be disney princess themed and everything. I've made friends with alot of people there, quite enough for a party so I am looking forward to it. I think it's really cute that he is baking me a cake. On my birthday morning (Saturday) I am going to the Great Gorilla Run with some of my friends here. It is a charity marathon to raise money for wildlife conservation efforts. If enter, you get a crazy cool gorilla suit. We aren't in it (but I totally could do it cause it's only 4 miles) but we are going to go watch and take pictures of all the gorillas running along the Thames. I like to think they are doing it just for my birthday. We are also probably going to go out tonight and tomorrow. Seeing as Jessica, one of my flatmates, has her birthday the day after mine.
Last night I went to a lecture on the art of the British Empire, and how the feelings of the empire shifted, how this change was reflected in the art. It was
Andy the chef
You mean it cooks? a very cute little recpetion with wine and cheese and the woman who spoke was very interesting. I saw one of my (male) professors there, with another man. I'm only going to say I KNEW IT!!!! I ran into David there and it was the first time we have really gotten to speak besides a few hellos. For anyone who doesn't know he is also from Merritt Island.
I did laundry again, I'm still rusty on how long I should leave things in the dryer, so I had to run down at least 7 separate times. The only mistake I made this time was I seem to have shrunk my pillow case. As my pillow is now a very tight sqeeze. oh well, if it happens again, I found where they keep spare linen and I'll steal one.
Today was my first college test! Maths, of course. I spent some time studying last night, more time worrying that I didn't study enough, only to get there this morning for him to say it was an open note test. What! I had left my notes up in my flat, so I went au naturale and used only the ol' noggin. I did however, steal Jessica's notes when she was finished, just to check. I was the second person to finish so I got out early. It was about 9:40 so I made my way down to Trafalgar Square. I took my iPod with me this time. I must say that if London wasn't interesting before, it is definately interesting to music. I love how everyone seems to take on a story, depending on what you are listening to. This works for paintings as well. I spent some time with Frank Sinatra in the National Gallery, brousing my favourite sections. 16th century for art that belonged to Henry VIII including the best by Holbein. And the 1800's because that includes alot of the work from Rosetti, Talderama, Millais, Waterhouse, and other Pre-Raphaelites. I bought a post card of one of my favourites, called The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul de la Roche. I plan on sending it to Kelsey, even though I just sent one off yesterday. I knew that if anyone would appreciate it like me, it would be her. On my way through the streets I saw a film set! It was down an alley on tottenham court road. They had large lights, television screens, folding chairs, these huge cameras. They were obviously filming some actors in the alley standing behind a dodgy looking car. I wanted so badly to take pictures but I thought they might yell at me. I tried to see if I could recognize any actors, but I couldn't get a good look at any of them. But the fact that I saw my first real film set is quite exciting.
observation: I didn't realize how close I live to the West End, I'm practically in it. The areas around me are Soho which incompasses the west end and China town (now the doctors office makes sense), trafalgar square (Whitehall just past that), and covent garden in the other direction.
