At breakfast this morning, we ran into Faisal who had shown up to the hotel to wish safe travels to those who were heading out today. We hung out with him for a bit on the outdoor terrace while having some morning coffee before Kevin and I were picked up by our taxi to take us to Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. Our flight to London was on Royal Jordanian Airlines. I had purposefully arranged our flights to ensure we had an overnight layover in London and some time to take in some of the important sights. Kevin had connected with some friends of his who lived in the area and they were going to pick him up upon arrival at Heathrow airport in order to hang out. That left me to explore London this evening by myself. After more than a week with a set schedule and itinerary, I was looking forward to some time by myself to explore. Arriving in London, Kevin and I parted ways and I was off on the Victoria Line into London to check into our hotel for the night, the Best Western Cromwell in Kensington.
After checking in and having a quick
nap, I set out to do a little London exploration. After some warm sunny skies in Jordan for the past week, this evening was cool and chilly and as I walked up Cromwell Road heading towards Harrod's I realized that I was in need of something warmer. Saturday night along Cromwell Road was a happening place. The sidewalks were filled with people as I walked passed the Natural History Museum. Approaching Harrod's, the sidewalks became more crowded and the street much more congested. I arrived at Harrod's and the scene was a complete madhouse. Harrod's Department Store is world famous for it's high end luxury shopping and attracts visitors from all over the world. With just a few more weeks until the holiday season, Harrod's was already completely decorated in holiday decor. I walked around all the various departments looking for something that would catch my eye to buy as a souvenir for this trip. A new Burberry watch? A new expensive jacket? Nothing caught my eye but I was fine with just walking around. Most interesting was the Holiday section where I had hoped to buy some Christmas ornaments. Again nothing caught my eye and if it did, I
found it to be far too expensive. After my Harrod's exploration, I still needed a jacket so I went next door to an H&M in search of a more affordable jacket. I left H&M without a new jacket but did leave with a new travel bag.
As I was heading back to the hotel, I received a text from Kevin informing be that he was back. Apparently his friends didn't have too much time so they just did a quick walk around Windsor Castle along with dinner before having to leave. Having been to London a few times before, I had already seen much of the major highlights. This was Kevin's first time, so we decided to spend the evening seeing the major sights. Taking the Underground, our first stop was Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. I always find it mesmerizing to hear Big Ben when it chimes every hour and this time was no different. After checking out the nearby Westminster Abbey and explaining it's significance to Kevin, we made our way to nearby St. Stephen's Tavern to have some beer and a late dinner of fish and chips. After checking out another bar on the
other side of the River Thames, we called it night just a little past midnight.
