Our flight with Gulf Air via Bahrain left Heathrow at 9.30 in the morning so we had to be at the airport by 7.30 to check in. Our beautiful sister was kind enough to get up at 5am and give us a lift. We left home just after 6am and the trip took us about an hour so we arrived with plenty of time. Becks dropped us off and we said our goodbyes to Becky (and her Buddha belly with a little person inside) outside Terminal 3 then grabbed our packs and headed inside. We checked in with no drama and headed through to the “other side” for a coffee and some last minute shopping. We picked up a few bits we needed then headed to Starbucks for a couple of lattes. As we sipped our ... read more

It's been a busy fortnight. From the grim, humourless world of consulates and embassies via the dull but wholly necessary task of buying a new travel pack, to the massive foolishness of vaccinations whilst ill, it's all been educational. Some tips: 1) a) As soon as you have a plan of where you're going, do not delay - sort out the visas! We paid £95 for the Russian visa on same day service (£50 extra) because we were worried about running out of time. This means I have paid £95 for a tourist visa in Russia, £35 transit visa for Mongolia, and a month in China for £30. Plus the £78 Australian working holiday visa. 1) b) Even when the grumpy Russian consulate official asks seemingly witty questions about the size of the printout you just ... read more

Basic provisional routeChris BoothHello everybody and welcome to the first post of what will be my travel blog! On May 3rd I will begin my journey to Estonia, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Australia and South East Asia with my friend Martyn at first, to be joined by Kristina later. The plan is as follows: I set off with Martyn from London Stanstead airport on May 3rd headed to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. From there I'll be travelling by sleeper train to Moscow (a much more economical and fun way rather than flying direct and expensively to Moscow). A few days later I will board the Trans-Mongolian train bound for Beijing, transiting Mongolia. We have a month to explore China before meeting Kristina in Hong Kong around the 10th June. Then we fly to Australia for ... read more

Home Again It's been almost a week now. The deep winter duvet has yet to lose its appeal as the weather forecasters describe the evenings in London as "mild". It's less than 10 degrees ! How is that "mild". Brrrrrrrrr. I'm not writing this to whinge but it feels very weird being back and to not be paying less than 50p for a hair cut and beard trim. Good news - Travelblog email notifications are working again I'm told. Only just realised that you haven't been receiving notifications for the last 4 or 5 blogs - including my rant about the death of a climber on Mount Kenya. Hopefully you've been pointed to this entry by a notification email. If you go to my blogging home page (www.travelblog.org/bloggers/solarbod) you can read the blogs you might have ... read more

Cam and I arrived in England on Sunday Jan.21, 2007 after 4 flights, 1 canceled trip through New York, 1 new trip to the lovely Detroit airport, 1 ass of a US Customs agent in Montreal and 1 very interesting passenger. We arrived into gatwick only 1 hour behind schedule and took the Gatwick express into Londons Victoria station. Within minutes of arriving we met up with Kate and Joel who after heping us and our luggage through a tube ride and an overland ride graciously let us crash at their place at Leigh on sea. First on the list of things to do after sleep was to get cell phones, after that the search for lodging in London began. Luckily it only took a few visits to the city to find our new home. A ... read more
