Today we travelled back in timd to 1913 to the Beamish Open Air museum. For those from Australia, it could be compared to Sovreign Hill in Ballarat. Rather than a gold rush the society of the time was focused on coal mining.
We arrived on a chilly blustery morning, which would improve as the day went on. Upon arrival, Nat and I jumped on the tram with Joe for the historical town centre. We pushed aside children to race to the candy store for samples and a demonstration. Joe guided us from place to place, the old store, dentist, rail station, pit village and drift mine. We had a delicious lunch at ye olde fish n chips store in the village. Joe left us to tend to other matters and Nat and I jumped on a mine tour.
I actually banged by head on the entry to the mine and at the bottom needed to be almost on all fours to keep clear of the low roof. It was a grueling job back then to work in such places. Wrought with danger, poor health and physically demanding I loathe to imagine how difficult a lifestyle it would have been, especially

for the very tall.
Nat and I wandered on, through some Colliary houses, old farms and enjoyed a brief ride on a steam engine. By the time Joe returned to collect us we were happily sitting out front in the pleasant sunshine.
With Sarah and Maureen out salsaing at the theatre and Joe taking a golf lesson, Nat and I had a quiet night in catching up on some Game of Thrones on the tablet.
