So begins the start of my solo trip and first stop is Chester. It was talked up a lot in my guidebooks but now that I'm here I can't say that I understand the hype. Chester is very tourist dominated, and yes the old black and white "Magpie" houses are nice, but they can't help but feel a little fake, as if they're deliberatly on show just for the tourists - which of course, they mostly are. Whatever Chester's charms are, I'm not really seeing them. Glad I'm only here for one night.... read more

One of the few drawbacks of travelling through an English-speaking country is that the TV news is in English. So first thing in the morning I learned that England was in the midst of an all-time heat wave. Temperatures this coming afternoon were expected to be in the mid 90's. And now we were headed deeper into the world that had no clue what "air conditioning" meant. The Welsh don't seem to do breakfast either so I left the Hand Hotel with a rather empty stomach. We took a very scenic early morning jaunt from Llangollen to Chester, just over the border in England. The ride was only half an hour so we reached Chester just as the old Roman-aged town was opening up. James took us on a brisk walk along the old town wall. ... read more

Learning from our last weekend away (missing the train to Brussels!), we set our alarms for 4:40am so that we could leave the house at 5:20am. We needed to catch a bus from Chatham where we live, to the train station in Strood as there were engineer works on the train tracks inbetween. So we got to London on time and even had a chance to sit down and relax before we got on the Virgin Train that would take us to Runcorn Station. It was a 3 hour train ride, but the train was quite nice and new. We had our Ipods and books to amuse us and the trip didn't seem to take long at all. I couldn't see much of the country-side on the way up North as we weren't near a good ... read more

Whoever said that the east of Europe is catching up with the west at a rapid rate was singularly on his own expressing this opinion.... we arrived in Prague last Saturday night. For booze mentalists and stag weekenders this journey has seemingly become the road to el dorado. Quite frankly the place is full of drunks and whores. To put it mildly.... and truthfully. There are places of interest and there is plenty to do, but I'm of the inate belief that a city as overrun with casinos, strip joints and brits is in a state of terminal freefall, although the rooms at the holiday inn were very pleasant..... and they have good taste in cured meats. So after a few days in 'fabulous' Praha, it was all aboard the Night Train to Budapest. Not being ... read more

I wish I had known about this earlier! Here I am, 4 1/2 months into my stay in the UK, and I could have been keeping a journal the whole time. I will try to start from the beginning. I left the USA on the 29th of December, 2004 to come to the UK. My reason for coming was a matter of the heart, and I found myself free of that reason after a few weeks here, and with a freedom to do anything I wanted. Around the same time I was offered a job in Chester. At the time I was living in the south in a suburb of London. "Chester? Where in the world is Chester?" Well, it turns out Chester is just about the coolest little town I could have found myself accidentally ... read more
