Carlo, Jimena and I headed up to Cambridge for the weekend as an escape from London and to see more of England while we’re here.
On the way in the city centre, we found a farm show at the park which we had a good look around before dropping our gear off at the only backpackers in town.
We had organised a walking tour around Cambridge, starting off at The Eagle, a pub where top academic minds would come together over pint and discuss / nut out their latest theories and the lab where Ernest Rutherford, a great NZ physicist, spend a lot of his time developing his works before receiving a Nobel prize in chemistry. We had a look through the Great St Mary’s Church, and up the large bell tower where you could see right down into Kings College and also the market on the other side. We were shown through the amazing King’s College, including there large chapel full of stained glass windows and carved furnishings, and were able to walk right down to the River Cam aka ‘The Backs’ as a number of colleges back on the river.
We walked down to Trinity College
and had a look at what we could see from the outside, and meet up with Leo. Just down the road we saw an empty ice-cream cart with a sign saying ‘Carlo’s Ice’s’ - so we had to get a photo of Carlo with it! - but unexpectedly, a queue formed within seconds, with an agitated old lady at the front yelling at Carlo “Are you going to sell me an ice-cream or not?!!” .. haha the rest of us were in stitches!
Leo took us to a nice riverside restaurant for lunch before walking up Castle Mound, a hill just outside the city centre giving nice over view back towards the town.
We all went to GBK (the Gourmet Burger Kitchen = good NZ tucker)to teach the Italian’s and the Columbians what real food is! and then headed out with Leo and his mates for his birthday and to check out the Cambridge night life.
We meet up with Leo again the next morning and had a walk through Jesus Green, where there happened to be a marathon underway. We went punting along the River Cam, and The Backs and had a guide to tell us
Christ's College
one of the many colleges in Cambridge all sorts of interesting stories and facts about various things along the way.
One of the most interesting things in Cambridge is ‘Mathematical Bridge’ - a bridge designed and built across the River Cam using no bolts or nails etc. The bridge was successfully built and used. However no one believed that it was true and it was ordered for this bridge to be dismantled and reassembled to prove that it used no bolts… the problem is, the people who pulled it apart had no idea how to put it back together again and to they had to use bolts! Hahaha
