After our short stop in Liechtenstein we drove on to the city of Lucerne. We checked into the Hotel Alpha parked the car and relaxed for a few minutes before heading into town for a pint. The hotel was clean and great and even had a small balcony. The pub we were planning on going to was on the other side of the Reuss River so it gave us a great reason to walk across the covered Chapel Bridge. This covered wooden bridge built in 1333 is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe. Chapel Bridge was designed to help protect the city of Lucerne from attacks. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century, depicting events from Luzerne's history. Much of the bridge, and the majority of these paintings, were destroyed in a 1993 fire, though it was quickly
rebuilt. After a couple of pints we grabbed dinner and headed back to the hotel for some much needed sleep.
