What a whirlwind of a trip to Geneva. This is one of the reasons I decided to stay in Spain - to take advantage of being able to be in another European country in two hours. Firstly, I have to admit I woke up on Saturday morning not really wanting to take a flight anywhere, after a long week. But I made myself go, and was half-dozing off in the plane until for some reason I felt like opening the window shutter and boy was I reminded of why I love travelling. We were just flying past the Swiss Alps and the view was awesome. I don't know if these pictures even capture half of the feeling but it's so good to see stuff that you've read about and seen in magazines, on tv, etc. I ... read more

Would Love to Ski…but Just Plain Can’t Today’s plan was to hit the slopes and we both really wanted to spend most the day skiing because it was officially our last day in snowville and in Switzerland all together. But in the immortal words of John Steinbeck “the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.” The day was clear and cold, without a cloud in the sky. Seemed like the perfect day to ski. After getting up to Sunnegga Paradise we strapped into our skis and set off. First of all, all the slushiness from the day before that made the slopes easy to ski had become ice over night. After the grating machines had come through everything was a solid patch of ice. Not fun! Secondly, my legs were really hurting ... read more

Zermatt: The land of huge mountains and skiing From Interlaken we set out for the very southern end of Switzerland which borders Italy. As you head south the mountains only get bigger in the Alps and therefore the number of tunnels increase and their size is amazing. Earlier in the trip we drove through a tunnel that was 15.4km long (roughly 12 miles). But this trip definitely took the cake on tunnel size and complexity. As we approached Zermatt, Tom Tom was telling us to take a ferry which made me a little upset because I was envisioning a boat trip that would be long and expensive. Instead we were surprised that we had to drive onto a train. The train trip was pretty cheap considering (only 20 SF ~ 15 US dollars). After a ... read more

Interlake, Gimmelwald and Murren Fondue: Do’s and Don’ts Last night we decided that it was time to get Fondue, Swiss style. Our hotel pointed us to two places in town that served Fondue, one with few choices and one with a ton of choices. We opted for the one with a ton of choices despite the fact that it was run by Chinese people instead of Swiss. We weren’t sure what to order because of the number of choices on the menu so we decided to go big. We picked the all you can eat option with meats and vegetables on the side. As you can guess we were feeling hungry and thought that we might want more than one serving. Boy, were we wrong! The Fondue cheese is amazing and so much better than ... read more

We had a long train ride from Geneva to Sarnen, I beat Advanced Wars Dual Strike on my Nintendo (yessss!) and we soaked up some Swiss scenery along the way. It was a long travel day and we were glad to meet Alban at the station in Sarnen, we grabbed some food and he took us back to his place for a few welcome drinks and an action packed game of Risk (which he won, told you the Ukraine is weak!) I met Alban many moons ago when he came to NZ to study english and lived as a homestay with us, and many thanks go out to Alban for having us stay with him at his house for the week and for taking some time off to spend hanging out with us! Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Verbier January 1st 2007

For my first New Years Eve in the northern hemisphere, I headed to Verbier, Switzerland for a long weekend. The reports of the conditions were not good - it had not snowed since 18 December (!!!). Luckily, having spent many years skiing in Oz, I am used to icy conditions and not much snow. When I arrived, the snow conditions were actually better than expected (thank goodness for man-made snow and low expectations), and I managed to fit in two pretty good days of snowboarding. Actually, as it turned out, I was lucky we were at Verbier, as it was one of the few skiable resorts in the area (people were even heading there from other resorts like Chamonix). One great thing about the poor snow conditions was the blue skies, which meant the amazing views ... read more

In between jobs and had a week to go before being starting a new (old?) career in Geneva. This is the second new year spent in Verbier (also spent 2005 / 06 there, but in swanky montpellier hotel). Got an apartment with TP this time, and spent 31st Dec - 7th Jan on the mountains. It had not snowed for about two weeks prior to 31st Dec. Green patches everywhere. As luck would have it, it blizzard for about 24 hours the day we arrived. Avalanche alert the next day, but we had enough good days with plenty of sunshine and powder for the week. Awesome. Finally got to the top of Mont Fort on a sunny day. As expected, the view was spectacular and worth all the trouble to get there. New year celebration was ... read more
