This morning it was super foggy down in Interlaken - cloud cover was barely above the buildings. Have I mentioned how much I love fog haha. Thankfully it was supposed to be a sunny day in the mountains, so I set off to Eigergletscher and Kleine Scheidegg in search of more spectacular views, and figured I'd loop back 'round First to do the zipline. Sure enough as we started to rise out of the valley, the sun came out to play.
FYI all the trains meet up in terms of connections, which is great for organization purposes but makes for a mad dash as people try to get seats. We arrived into Lauterbrunnen at 8:55 for the 9:07 departure and I just wasn't game for an attack. I bummed around the town for 20min and made sure I was back before the Interlaken train came in for the 9:37 train. I avoided the stampede, but the 9:37 was def way busier - once the Interlaken train got in it was sardine level, like OC Transpo at rush hour lol.
Anyway. Kleine Scheidegg is a tourist zoo. I was there 15min and hated it lol. It's bad when there are
literally announcements telling people not to push...and not like a one-time announcement. There was a *3 HOUR* wait to get onto the train to Jungfrau which is frankly ridiculous. I refuse to pay extra (I already have a pass for the region) and wait that long and then risk my throat reacting up there and having to wait forever to come back down again. I'm happy with the other views I've had/will have. Included in my pass is Eigergletscher which is on the same train to Jungfrau, but you get to go in a separate line, so I got on the first train (10min wait) and off I went.
So there is pretty much nothing at Eigergletscher haha, it really just sits at the base of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. Damn, it's an impressive horizon though... those are some mighty mountains. I saw people getting ready to climb Eiger which is scary - it's apparently quite the dangerous (ie deadly) mountain. No worries, I won't be doing that any time soon lol. I'm happy to walk along the base and just admire from below. Plan was to walk down to Kleine Scheidegg, an hour or so hike that is
thankfully downhill lol. There are so many little mountain flowers everywhere - so pretty! I took my time taking pics of the flowers because there was a HUGE groups of asians tourists and I didn't want to get stuck in the gaggle. Like, they had a camera and video guy with them type of huge lol. They then started doing group stretches and I'm like... ok maybe I do have time to go ahead of them haha.
The walk was nice - it wasn't anything super special other than the man made lake which was a vibrant turquoise and the reflections were spectacular once more. Other than that it's a pretty continuous view of the 3 mountains.
Since it was still brilliant sunshine, I made my way back to Grindelwald to go up and see what I missed at First. Basically it's a pretty view of mountains, go figure 😉 Anyway, up at First I didn't redo everything - I basically just skipped in thru the back way to see the final part of the Cliff Walk, took a photo without going out on the ledge (lineup was INSANE) and then proceeded to make my way towards the
zipline. Weeeeeee! It was an 90min wait but totally worth it to go flying +80 km/hr down a mountain, free as a bird. I loved every second of it.
You ride the rest of the way back down in the cable car - I was sitting with this American family that now lives in Italy. The kids were too cute. The little girl was like telling me her life story, the brother was like I don't know her and the parents were like we sometimes pretend to be Canadian. LOL. Ok then. That was a sweet encounter.
