We have spent our last few days in Montreux, where the Montreux Jazz Festival has been going on. The festival is a two week long celebration of all different types of music, not just jazz. Headliners over the two weeks included Prince, John Legend, Van Morrison, the Pet Shop Boys, etc. While we were there, we hoped to catch Norah Jones and, just possibly, the Wu Tang Clan (mom's favorite...always used to play it for the kids in carpool). Non-headliners played a variety of venues, including some smaller stages and an outdoor area. We arrived our first night a bit exhausted from a full day's train ride and took a break before heading over from Vevey, a nearby city where we were staying. We watched the outdoor stage for a bit, then headed into the Montreux ... read more

On July 2, we went to visit the Castle of Chillon in Territet (I think it is in Territet and I think that is how you spell it) which sits right on by Lake Geneva. Territet is the city right next to Montreux. It was raining again that daz- what´s new? and we basically were told that we couldn´t go if it rained cuz we were supposed to make a 15 min walk from the funicular station. The funicular is basically a cable car that goes diagonally down the mt from the Glion station to Territet that comes every 15 min. The train, on the other hand, comes every 30 min. and kinda winds more and takes you to the heart of Montreux. Luckily, our program assistants ended up driving us from the station to ... read more

After about 14 hours on trains we arrived at Lausanne. An almost instantaneous leap across the platform and our connection is underway along the northern edge of Lake Leman (Lake Geneva). We pass through Villeneuve (Red Bull Acro Competitions will be here in a month or so), on to Montreux, past the beautiful Chateau Chillon (on the banks of the lake) and finally arrive in Aigle around 8:30am. Across from our hotel is a great little shop - a chocolatier. Breakfast calls. Walking back down the street we see a couple that look familiar (even though we haven't seen them for half a decade) - It's Jean Paul and Janine. So delighted to see them already. They are flat out with arrangements for the big day tomorrow. For the past week, all through Denmark and Germany ... read more

CHEEEEEEEEESE!!! Europe » Switzerland » Montreaux By StephGracElaineJune 28th 2007 Alright...so finally we have an entry devoted to cheese. hahah. Yesterday was semi-rainy and Elaine and Grace went on a Montreux adventure in the morning while I was in class. They were on the hunt for clothes. hahah But they can tell you their story. We all took the bus to the Cheese Factory! First we watched a super boring video presentation on how their cheese was made, and it seemed like the most important factor to their cheese was that the switzerland happy cows eat fresh grass and flowers only. Therefore the cheese has some special floral aroma - hahaha. (Even though the cheese smelled... read more

So REALLY.. how good-looking are the ppl in Switzerland? Bonuses of living in Switzerland: -it's a huge melting pot so you get ppl who speak French, German, and Italian.. or all (hot!) -ppl come from all over to visit and study here and most of them speak English -setting off the fire alarm means that fire-fighters and policemen will come (tall, blond, and handsome.. seriously, men are not the same as the US) -European men are extremely charming -European men have a cleaner look here.. you can't compare someone who is considered "hot" in the US with someone who is handsome here.. it's just 2 different categories -men and women both have piercing blue eyes (ice clear blue) and blond/e hair Random Facts about Swiss Life: -outlets have 10 random holes in them so you can ... read more

switzerland: home of amazing sights, food and air!!! and juicy fruits!! we arrived in zurich, switzerland at around 9:00 AM (switz is 9 hours ahead of ca time). the airport was sooo efficient--there was no wait AT ALL!! craaazy. at a cell phone service counter, we got sim cards, calling cards, etc. ***euro travel tip: go to your cell phone carrier at least 5 days in advance. give them a slight overview of your travel plans: where you're going, how long you're staying, how many people you are going with, etc. ask them to 1) activate international roaming and 2) unlock your phone for international sim cards (#2 is VERY IMPORTANT). international roaming with t-mobile costs $0.99/minute!!! zurich is 3 hours and 15 min from glion. because we wanted to save around $300, we flew ... read more

Geo: 46.488, 6.7898Bought some yogurt for breakfast - pomegranate - goooooooood! Almond yogurt - gooooooood! Off to the train station. Walked through a week-end market on the way. Too bad I had no time to browse - it looked pretty good. Grabbed a great sandwich for the train - chicken cutlet, served in an excellent, crisp cheese bun. Heavenly ... until I bit into the centre filled with curry sauce. Curry sauce seems to be a favourite in German regions. It actually wasn't that bad, but I prefer it without. Rode on a nice double-decker train with couches, tables, and sofas - positively luxurious! The Swiss countryside was bathed in fog today - it's funny because fog would normally dull its appearance. But today, it actually enhanced its beauty. Off to the French-speaking region of Switzerland. ... read more

We are actually righting this entry about 1 month after the fact but will keep the entry dates true to our travels for our own records. We have copped a little abuse about why we have taken so long to create new updates, but it's basically because we didn't want to sit in internet cafes all day when the weather and sights were so beautiful. We are now back in UK and the weather is crap so it's a great time to do some more updates. Anyone who has travelled in Europe and UK will know that when the sun is out you get outdoors, as you never know how long it may last. So back to the blog! 4th July 2006 and apparently on the other side of the Atlantic the Americans are celebrating their ... read more
