Today we’re in Switzerland! Which must mean Leah and I managed to catch our train from Lyon, just. We had a scenic train journey through low mountain ranges, dotted with villages and followed the River Rhône through into Geneva. The customs arriving into Switzerland was like walking through an empty hallway, arriving in the country with no fuss and no stamp in our passports. We soon found out that Switzerland still uses Swiss Franks, and not the Euro! - and we only had Euros! … what was the saying about “assuming”?? We dumped our bags at our hostel and hit the streets of Geneva, heading straight for the lake… err via the Swiss chocolate shop of course! On our way we looked at the ‘Brunswick monument’ that contains the tomb of Charles II, Duke of Brunswick, ... read more

So, I made it back to Europe. It's a lot sooner than I thought I would be, but I am excited, nonetheless. Time to cheerish old memories and make a whole lot more. The fiaso of my journey to Geneva started early Monday morning when our family (Mom, Dad, Andy, and I) went down to East Lansing from Grand Rapids to drop Any off for his two week romp in the woods with his Forestry class. Did I mention he had to be there at 6:30AM? Then the three of us remaining went down to Dundee in time for the daily opening of Cabela's, sportsmen's Mecca. We then headed towards the airport and made a final pitstop at Meijer's for some food and a travel clock. I wound up getting timbits and an iced frap ... read more

I'm trying to figure out the best way to keep people update on me. I'm not sure if there is general fatigue with the eternal question of "where is Leanne?" or if there are people who are still interested. Now that pictures are entirely digital, and I want to post so many, instead of sending an email out, I decided to do this blog. So here is the first entry. Yesterday, with my first non work related friend (what a victory!), I went to Gruyeres, which may be familiar to some of you who are cheesy people. Gruyeres is the region and city from which Gruyere the cheese comes from. Being that it is one of my favorite cheeses ever (quiche is not quiche without it, nor is fondue anything but gruyere (okay, and maybe emmental ... read more

I have signed 5 billion forms, starred in the world’s worst mugshot (which is now permanently displayed on my ID card), and met my team…they are fabulous. Mostly British. All very keen to have a laugh YAY! I work in France, but dine across the road in Switzerland at CERN’s Restaurant 2, which backs onto a vineyard and is framed by snow-dotted mountains. There are two floors of food on offer at R2. I had the plat de jour: “shrimps with love in a wok”. Apparently last time this dish graced the menu, “love” translated to “lots of carrots” (shrimp with lots of carrots in a wok); today it meant “scrummo vegetables and perfectly cooked ginormous prawns”. Delish! Nan would have been drooling! Of course one can’t just have a single course for one’s lunch: ... read more

It has been a challenge to even blow our noses and cross the road, but, thankfully, we have managed to achieve a number of notable things: 1) Checked in to our hostel, then checked out the next day to move into one of only 15 CERN-managed apartments, skipping a waiting list of thousands thanks to terrific timing (we popped our head into Housing Services only hours after the previous guy broke his contract) 2) Unlocked door of said apartment after the tenth try. Can now open at our leisure. 3) Discovered only lift for said apartment is designed for midgets. Discovered lights in only lift are unreliable, able to plunge user into claustrophobic darkness at any time. Then discovered unidentified chunk of fresh vomit/diarrhea in corner of only lift. 4) Discovered stair case is extremely ... read more

Hello all! I've just returned from a week long stint in Geneva, Switzerland that was just a fantastic learning opportunity and a great getaway as well! My journey began with a fairly uneventful 14 hour train ride. Let me tell you, 14 hours on a train is FAR too long. But it was cheaper than taking a plane even with discount airlines so I survived. That and if I were to have lost luggage at least it would be my own fault! I arrived Sunday morning at the train station, and quickly found my hotel which was thankfully just around the corner. As I was checking in, I turned around to see Kim, Melissa and Caroline, 3 of the 9 people from home that I was meeting there! It was such a great, great feeling ... read more

Tarquin and myself were invited to Cliara's birthday party yesterday . He had an absolute ball, took a while to get into it as there were quite a few people and so much going on. We had 2 huge marquis out on the lawn with everything from electric jeeps for the kids to drive around in, jumping castles, ball pitts, slippery slides, disco dance floor complete with full light set up, face painting, balloon maker, spanish dancers the lot!. The food was great (of course) with massive kids buffet holding all the kids favourites. Tarquins favourite part I think of the whole party was the chocolate fountain!! So you can imagine him walking around with his fruit on a stick and chocolate literally all over his face. The photog got some great shots so am ... read more

Had a good day today, Brendan is home. The whole day off!!! So we took a leisurely stroll/tram into town, had lunch at BabysLounge and found (to my horror) that every single shop here is CLOSED on Sunday!!! Absolutely everything, supermarkets included! So our plan to grab a couple of essentials today went out the window. oh well. Took Tarquin to a local market and carnival kind of thing I guess you could call it, lots of rides, dodgems etc. Then to the park for a bit. Will probably have a nice quiet night in for dinner in the warmth. ... read more

If you're just checking my blog, be sure the you caught my last entry which I just published. I split this up into two because the last one was getting excessively long. So, when we last spoke, Derek and I had just arrived at Vicky's house in Erps-Kwerps, Belgium. OH! I forgot a pivital moment of our first night there. We went and got some famous Belgian frites (fries) to take back to Vicky's house. Mmmmm so gooooood! That's where the real "French" fries are from, for sure. We ate an absolutley disgusting amount of fries, and Derek has the pictures to prove it. It's a really big thing in Belgium and Holland to eat these tasty fries smothered in goopy sauce, which is usually mayonaise (although there is generally a huge array of sauces for ... read more
