Part 1: Today we travelled to Chur. We decided to leave Zurich a bit early as we were already wide awake. So we walked down to the train station (down all the stairs so not as bad) which warmed us up as it's freezing outside! Think it snowed outside last night (all the trees on the mountain close by have snow on the tops). We got to the train station and found out we could take an earlier train, so instead of freezing outside we decided to get on the train. The train ride was beautiful, it went past all the snowy top mountains, farmland and lakes, and it even snowed at one point! We got off the train in Chur and immediately got lost again. Luckily we found a map so we took a picture of it and headed in the right direction to the hotel. Chur is beautiful! It's a cute little place with old buildings and is nice and quiet too. We finally got to our hotel....which was closed, we knocked on all the doors but no one answered. We found out it's on top of a pub which only opens at 4pm (blair spoke some pigeon German
to one of the neighbours to find out this information). So we have to wait until then until we can check in....so I'm currently writing this part of the blog inside subway trying to kill some time until we can get rid of our big bags. Our hotel isn't in the nicest part of town....right in the middle of all the pubs, bars and nightclubs so think we'll be having another early night to avoid getting mugged.... or worse! We are planning to head up the gondola later today when we get rid of our bags and see some more of Chur so will finish this later on 😊
Part 2: We went back to our hotel to check in but there was still no one there. We saw a note on the door saying we had to call the hotel to get our instructions on how to enter..... But we don't have any sim card for overseas so I headed down the road to use a payphone while blair guarded the suitcases (thought payphones were pretty useless until now!). We finally got our instructions and got into the hotel. Our room is really nice, I tried to figure
out if the door was locked on the outside as we only had keys, but as this was happening some guy shouted something at me and walked towards me as I was entering the room, but as soon as he saw blair inside he backed off straight away..... So thinking blair may have just saved my life! After we'd settled in we could finally explore the city. We headed in to the old part of Chur with lots of old buildings and narrow walkways. It was really cool to walk trough the town with the tall buildings and then get random glimpses of the beautiful mountains in the background. We played a game of giant chess that we found in one of the courtyards and then had dinner at a pizza place. We practised our German at the restaurant with the waiter and at the end he gave us each a drink of limoncello. Everything in Switzerland is so expensive! We spent $90 (nzd) on lunch yesterday which included a shared salad and lasange, and dinner cost $25 for one pizza at a cheap uni takeaway restaurant. So Switzerland is not a place to visit if you're on a tight
budget! It's so beautiful and relaxing though, very excited about our train ride tomorrow!
