I never get tired of riding trains through the Alps. Although this time it was a sleeper train so I caught only what I could in the bit of daylight we had. We got to Zurich in the morning and we didn't find our friends awaiting us in a rented peugeot as planned. In light of this we made our way to our nearby guesthouse and proceeded with the check-in. We left our bags in the room and walked back to the train station for Ret to get some cash and in hopes of finding our ride. I only waited for about 5 minutes when, to my surprise, a brand new black Mercedes stops at my feet. It even took me a moment to realise that it was in fact my ride. Turns out the rental agency was out of our car and they comped us a mercedes with a gps navigation system in it. We rolled all weekend in pure German luxury. We didn't even stop back by the Hotel before we had the lady with the pretty voice gently leading the way to Vals to visit Peter Zumthor's Baths. For most it's simply a therapeutic getaway. For us, it
Oh Yeah
I even got cockier over the weekend because of this car was also an architectural pilgrimage. Every architect dreams of visiting a select list of modern gems and doing so almost becomes a religion. Vals was about an hour and a half away but we stopped periodically for photo-ops and snowball fights. Driving through the alps was exhilerating. The views and the mountain towns were incredible. Topping this excursion off was, of course, the baths. We did the whole experience and it's one of the greatest things I've done in my life. Although this experience did have an overshadowing effect on the rest of the weeked, walking around in Zurich was still great. We saw some really nice modern architecture including a subway station by Calatrava, a famous Spanish architect. Aside from it being very expensive, Zurich was a cool city to spend our other day in. Now its time to look at some pictures.
