Malmö!
Ahhh Malmö... From the moment I stepped off the train from Gothenburg, I knew I was really going to love this city!
I slept in relatively late yesterday, which was ok because there was a train to Malmö every hour on the :40. I ended up catching the 11:40, this time with a slightly more scenic view out the window. We passed mostly countryside, quite resembling the Canadian Shield, but there were a few really nice coastal villages we ripped through that looked like gorgeous places to live.
Again, about 3 hours later, I arrived in what I think now, is my favourite city, city so far.
Like I said, I stepped off the train and instantly was hit by the sun and the positive vibes of a Saturday afternoon in this place of just under 300,000 inhabitants. The hostel was the closest yet to the railway station and I found it no probably, with on a slight delay as I come across a running race happening in the streets.
I checked in, and for the first time felt rushed to get back outside without really settling in. I threw my sheets on the bed,
Park
One of many beautiful parks in Malmö quickly changed out of my travelling clothes, and headed out to explore the city.
I first came across the King's Park right in the heart of the city, and was just blown away by the atmosphere that was radiating from it. There were couples out for a stroll, children playing, dogs barking, teens playing their music and sports and birds everywhere. But it was not one bit overwhelming; it was like everything was in balance and it was truly wonderful. For those of you not on Twitter or Facebook, I posted "I'm pretty sure this is what it feels like to fall in love with a city," after my first afternoon here. I walked around, enjoying the weather and came across the twisting torso building synonymous with the city, and eventually the Malmö castle, another impressive, old site. I walked through another garden (and I think this one now replaces Gothenburg with most in bloom), past a windmill, and around many ponds, just taking it all in; I couldn't ask for a better afternoon.
Realizing it is a little big city and I had already seen most of the things I had planned on seeing in the next
day or so, I decided to find a nice place to eat dinner on a patio, and treated myself to a delicious pesto pizza from an Italian place in the Gamla Stan of Malmö, here called Lille Torg.
I then headed back to the hostel stopping at Le Croissant along the way for some fika, a piece of salted caramel cheesecake and a cappuccino, to finish off the day!
There, while periodically checkin the boxscore on the raptors playoff Game 1, I met some more English speaking people. They turned out to also be students studying abroad on a mini vacation... We had a couple of Canadians, from Brampton and Vaughan, a girl from Germany, a Finnish gal and a lad from Holland. I ended up accompanying them out for dinner, which turned out to just be at Max, basically a European McDonald's.
Side note: I just noticed that you don't use an before the world European even though it starts with a vowel... Weird.
We walked back towards the hostel and I left them to go back and head to bed.
Which sounds turned out to be easier said than done... We've got a
couple of snorers in the room folks. But that was ok, because they kept me up long enough to catch Hannah's second game in her World Seven's tournament in BC... Talk about a time change there, aha.
Eventually I did fall asleep, however, and that was good.
