Much nature, one castle, one lighthouse, one shipwreck and a lot more Over Easter we took some time off from work and went on a short road trip to Öland Island. Öland Island is one of the 25 traditional Swedish districts. Actually it is the smallest of all these districts. Öland is roughly 135 km from north to south but only about 15 km from east to west at its widest. As you understand, Ö... Read Full Entry

Modern navigation technology has pretty much rendered the lighthouse obsolete and today its value is mainly historical and as a symbol.

We just have to mention the restaurant Ölandsfiskarn in Byxelkrok and their mixed fish plate. It was absolutely awesome.

Rauks are created when the ocean erodes limestone rock and only leaves freestanding pillars. These are better described as rauks in creation

In Påskallavik there is a museum with some of Arvid Källström works. Sadly, we have to admit that we didn't find his sculptures any interesting.

Visit Sweden
We hope to visit Sweden in the next two or three years. I will have to ask you to map out our itinerary. Decades ago I planned to buy a Volvo and pick it up at the factory and drive it all around before having it shipped home. Sadly, I don't like the new Volvo's as much as I did the old ones so that is not likely to happen. Keep blogging.... we are enjoying your country.

On visiting Sweden
I look forward to give you travel advice for a journey in Sweden. But that will be later. For the time being we will keep on traveling our elongated country ourselves and upload pictures and tell you all about what we see and do during our own travels here. We will do our best to make Sweden look interesting. /Ake

Construction mistakes
When they constructed the bridge they made some mistakes. Because of those they have had to make plenty of repairs on the bridge over the years. But it is a cool bridge nevertheless

Pine tar history
I started reading about pine tar and how Sweden was dominating the world market for a while. It turned out that the bulk of all pine tar was shipped via a small island in Stockholm. An island I have visited several times without having the slightest idea of its history as a pine tar distribution hotspot.

Nice Trip!
Wonderful to read about your latest travel and the interesting sites on Öland Island. The rauks you mention (Byrums Raukar) caught my attention because I had hoped to see the rauks when we visited Gotland in 2005; we never got to see them but I bought a postcard showing them! Lovely photos!

Many rauks on Gotland
I visited Gotland many years ago and had no problem finding rauks. I then saw many that were much better than Byrums Raukar. There is a chance that we will visit Gotland next year. If we do I will post several more pictures of rauks, I promise. /Ake

Roxette
Ah, I love Roxette! And when I read you had written a blog entry on Öland Island, I immediately thought of their "Listen to your Heart" video. I'm glad you were able to visit Borgholm Castle - legendary in my eyes for Roxette reminiscence ? The rest of the island looks very interesting too ?

Öland has gone under our radar
Actually, we were not aware of how interesting Öland really is before we went there. As a travel destination it has sort of gone under the radar for us. But now that we've been there we would put it in the top five of places worth visiting in Sweden. /Åke
