It's impossible to be homesick when you get to introduce your child to the sea. It was such a good day today. Jeff and the girls went to a bible camp with the pastor this afternoon, so I asked Jorgen if he'd like to walk to the sea after dinner. I was a bit concerned, as it's a bit of a walk and I'm unable to carry his robust little person. He assured me he could walk the whole way. We walked, hand in hand, to the sea. The moment we rounded the path and he saw the water was priceless...his face lit up and and he said, "is that the sea?". As I said earlier, it's not beachy sea, it's a rocky sea. Here are a few observations from Week 1: 1. Grey Volvo station wagon's rule...followed closely by grey Volvo sedans. 2. You can't do a "quick load of laundry" in Sweden. 3. If groceries were this costly in the States, we wouldn't have an obesity problem. 4.My kids are much quieter living in a big house on 2 acres than in a small row house with shared walls. 5. Ikea's Swedish Meatballs are even better eaten in Sweden - with a big pile of french fries on top. 6.Foreign kids throwing tantrums sound just like American kids throwing tantrums. 7.Swedish women have better body images than we do. 8.Knowing the language is helpful before moving to a new country. 9.People, in general, are kind and helpful. 10.Webcams and Skype are great inventions. ... read more

As it turns out, saying the words, "we're moving to Sweden for a year" is far different than actually moving to Sweden. We have, however, arrived safely and we love our new home. This posting is a long one, but I think it’s only because it’s the first. I'll start with the journey... August 4th we woke up in my childhood home in Howard, SD...we drove to St. Peter, MN to collect our bags and transportation to the airport (and one final session with my hairstylist...not sure what I'm going to do without Brenda!) and were on to Minnneapolis/St. Paul international Airport.
