Metallica, UFO, three bridges, a chimney and many talking stones

We would like to write a little about five somewhat unusual sites we visited this summer. These sites have very little in common other than all being located in Sweden and that they are somewhat unusual. One of them, the smokestack, we didn't see this summer. That's a photo we pulled out of the archives. But we throw it in here anyway because it fits nicely into this blog entry's theme, which is unusualness (which we of course know is not a word).

The Metallica Memorial: Strictly this is a memorial over Cliff Burton who was bass player of the heavy metal band Metallica in their early days. In September 1986 Metallica was on tour in Europe. In the night, just outside the small village Dörarp in Halland, the bus went off the road and in the crash Cliff Burton was killed. The memorial over Cliff Burton sits about 200 meters away from the actual crash site.

The UFO monument: In Ängelholm in Skåne (aka Scania) there is a monument over a UFO landing which supposedly took place there in 1946. The monument was created by a

local entrepreneur, Gösta Carlsson, who claims that he saw the UFO and the extraterrestrial beings who travelled in it.

Three bridges: In Håverud, a small village in Dalsland, there is a gorge where there are three bridges. Three different bridges in one place is hardly something that makes a place unusual. But when you take into account that each bridge is designed for a separate mode of transportation, it is a bit unusual. In fact, this is the only place in the world where this can be seen. The first bridge is for road traffic, the second is for trains and the third one is an aqueduct, hence it is a bridge for boats.

Chimney: In Landskrona in Skåne (aka Scandia) there is a combined heat and power plant that has a chimney with a knot on it. The knot symbolises that they don't release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Bexell's Talking Stones: Near the town Varberg in Halland (and also very close to the Grimeton Radio Station that we wrote about in our previous blog entry) is a site known as Bexell's Talking Stones. In the late 19th century a local landowner, Alfred Bexell, hired two

masons to engrave names of people and proverbs on rocks on his land. This was a project that went on for several years and today there are hundreds of engravings in at least three different areas. There is no record over the engravings and little is known of the reason why they were made. Since it is a large area with rocks everywhere, many of them overgrown by moss, it is likely that there still are many engravings out there waiting to be discovered.

In the area where Bexell's Talking Stones are there are also a few nature reserves. They have been established to protect beech forests. They not only protect the existing forests. There are also ongoing projects aimed to restore the beech forests that have been cut down. Beech forests are very special to walk around in since the canopies of the trees are very thick. Because of this the forests become rather dark and a bit mysterious. We have tried to capture this in a few photos we have added but we don't even come close to what the real experience is like.

We hope you enjoyed reading about these unusual

At this spot the extraterrestrials buried two crew members who had been killed in the crash. They dug them up when they had repaired the ship and took their dead mates with them. So these corpses are not in Area 51

We think the aqueduct in Håverud is the only aqueduct in Sweden. Compared to aqueducts in other countries it is small though. Behind the railway bridge can be seen

Possible Inspiration for carving the Talking Stones
Maybe the stone carvers were inspired by the Ten Commandments.

It's possible
I have read somewhere that Bexell wanted to create an undestructible archive of knowledge. But I doubt that. Perhaps he just did it for the fun of it. Thank's for reading the blog Harvey. Take care. /Ake

That's a good one
I only knew of it because I saw a small article in the newspaper when they were opening it. If I hadn't read that I wouldn't have known about it. /Ake

The Twilight Zone...or is it the Outer Limits?
Metallica Memorial, UFOs, Three bridges, Chimneys & Talking Stones...many intrigues I'm sure. But what I want to know is the chimney with a knot in it, if its claim to fame is it does not emit CO2...then what toxins does it emit???

It is unclear
They burn mostly wood and paper, and then only small amounts of toxins are produced. They also burn plastics and that's worse I guess. /Ake

Fantastic
Oh, fantastic! I really enjoyed reading about these unusual places to visit in Sweden. The UFO landing site looks very interesting, as do the talking stones and the three bridges. I would very much like to go for a walk in the beech forest, the mystery of them seems very attractive. Thank you for posting such an interesting blog.

Three quirky sites and one genuinely good
We really like sites that the word "quirky" probably describes well. We have several of those scattered throughout our blogs. This time we put a few of those together to be able to make a blog all of its own. But I'd like to point out that the talking stones/beech forest was, although there is some "quirkiness" to it, a genuinely good site to visit. If you like hiking in forests that is. /Ake
