I am beginning to realise how big the world really is, an impression that is lost completely when one flies away on holiday. The journey to Stockholm is a long 36 hour slog up the Baltic sea, with no sight of land which if we could see it would be Sweden on the port side or Russia on the Starboard side. But at least the sea is still calm. Sitting in the Broadway lounge waiting for some amusement or other I turned to the old lady on my right who had just been served with a bright pink cocktail by a charming waitress and said, "They are very sweet these Philipinos, aren't they?" My sojourn on the Mediterranean-like Swedish island of Gotland was phenomenal. This past week was my one week of vacation from work, so I spent 4 days in Gotland and then 3 days out in the archipelago on the boat. I left work early on Friday and took the subway to meet Linn and Sandra at the central station. From there we got on a train (the Pendeltåg) to the ferry landing - about an hour south of Stockholm. The ferry took 3 hours and we arrived a little after 8:00pm. Cia - Linn's roomate in Uppsala - met us when we got off the ferry. We walked to her house from there (about 5 minutes). The manager of Tom’s Garage has obviously been watching Coyote Ugly. Apparently he liked it enough to make the female bartenders dance on the bar disk. He got a few things right; the music is right, 80’s rock music; the girls are young and sexy; the crowd is young, drunk, and enthusiastic. The manager forgot a few crucial things though. He forgot to instruct the girls to have fun. They look like they’d rather be somewhere else. Anywhere else. He also forgot to dress them accordingly. How could he expect anyone to go wild over baggy shirts and pants? Finally, he should have sent the poor girls to a dance class. Or an aerobics class. Or any class with any form of movement.
