01 First sight
This was my first sighting of the old town. Geo: 40.6564, -4.70032
Had a lazy start to the day. Caught the Metro to the main train station and then caught a train to Avila. Today I was doing a day trip out of Madrid. The guide book said the the town's city walls are quite impressive- I'm sold. One and a half hours and only €7 later I arrived. The old town is surrounded by a well preserved city wall with 88 watchtowers. The highest point of the wall is 12 metres high and the towers are 20 metres high at the gates. The cathedral is from the 12th century and is one of the earliest Gothic churches in Spain. I walked into the old town and found an entrance to climb the city walls. The views up there were pretty good. The town was very quiet because it was afternoon- Siesta time for many Spaniards, which meant that all cafes and shops were shut and the only people around town were the few tourists. My walk around the city walls was very peaceful. I was very impressed with the defensive walls and their height.
