Day 34 – September 26, 2016 - Caldas de Reis, Spain to Padron (Dodro), Spain – 12.5 Miles
As Julian and Moira did not stay at our hotel, we met them at the bridge this morning to begin our day’s walk which was a shorter day. While waiting on them to arrive I took a picture of what I am calling the “plastic blue man” as the metal frame is almost filled with water bottles.
We followed the arrows through town and soon reached a dirt path where we headed along the gentle Bermana river valley passing under a viaduct into the woodlands. As we are walking we passed by a couple we learned are originally from the Jalisco area in Mexico but live in California. This is the husbands fourth Camino and the wife’s first.
After crossing over the busy N-550 highway, we stopped for a coffee break at the Café Esperon in Cruce. After we left the café, we made our way through the curvy streets of Cruce and soon came upon some sheep who were let out of a barn making their way up the road and eventually went through an open gate into a

plastic blue man pasture. You sure could tell this wasn’t their first rodeo as they knew exactly where they were going.
As we passed by a church we looked over to our left and in the open pasture we spotted the cutest baby goats (one set of twins and one set of triplets). A little further up the road we saw a potbelly pig. We now return to the woodland area where we passed by an outside museum of old equipment.
As we continue through the woodland area we encounter several up and downs which eventually takes up to the high point for the day. We then descend down a rather steep path coming to a bridge which after crossing we join the country lane into the village of San Miguel where we stop at Café-Autoservicio for our lunch break. Just as we are getting ready to leave the cafe, some of the gals we have met from Florida arrive and I snap a picture of one gal that is a full blooded Cherokee and who is totally awesome.
Back on the path, we soon come across some good looking grapes that Harlan picks a few for all of us
to enjoy – very tasty! We continue on the country lane that takes us through several little hamlets where we come across a gentleman picking grapes and at one home we see an electric lawn mower mowing the yard – pretty cool.
Back in the woodland area we cross over the railway and soon go through the tunnel under the N-550. Upon reaching the rio Sar we walk alongside it until we come to a bridge we cross over and make our way to our hotel. Upon our way to our hotel, Harlan tries to feed this horse a chestnut he had been carrying with him but the horse would have nothing to do with him.
After we checked into our hotel and had a cold drink, we decided to go view the church – Igrexa de Santiago where we saw one of the great Jacobean treasures – the original stone “O Pedron” from which the town takes its name. In addition, this is said to be the mooring post to which the boat carrying James the Apostle tied up to the quayside along the river bank there.
Upon leaving the church we cross back over the

Sylvia and Salvador from California bridge and pass by the drinking font and roadside monument Fonte do Carme XVI with the Convento do Carme XVIII in the background. We then climb steeply up the stone steps along the Stations of the Cross to Monte Santiaguino which legends tells is where St James first preached the gospel message and is most significant of Jacobean sites that formed the front cover of our guide book. After taking some pictures, we make our way back down the stone steps and return to our hotel.
