Sorry it has taken me so long to update, times fly when it is 80 degrees everyday and you live 10 min, from the beach. A couple of weekends ago I went to Madrid for a couple of days and then to Toledo, a small village about an hour from there. I got a late night flight into the city and met a friend from Roanoke, Jaclyn, who is studying in Sevilla and her roommate Leah (from Natick), at a hotel just outside the city. As soon as we all got settled, and took nice hot showers because in malaga and sevilla we have freeezing ones everyday, we decided to venture out on the Madrid nightlife. We had dinner at this little place and got scammed a bit from being led by Frommers Guide to Madrid. We have decided that he is corrupt and one day we will make our own, reliable travel guide. After dinner we walked around trying to find the hotspots of Madrid. We came across this discoteca called Joy, and all of us got ID'd for the first time since Spain. Considering the drinking age is 18 we decided that was not that much of a compliment
but brushed it off and entered. The place was three floors and had a area with special tabled for VIP and a huge dancefloor: amazing! We danced all night until about 3 am this curtain was lifted and on this stage were about 8 or 9 people dressed in these elaborate costumes and they started to perform and sing. It was crazy! They were up on stage dancing until about 6 am when we decided to leave. We all had a great time and met some new friends that if we were going to go out at all, we would call them.
The next day we woke up at 11 and made our way into the city for some sightseeing. We went to the Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and hung out in some of the most beautiful parks. We got to know our way around the city pretty well considering how big it was. When we took a break for lunch we found this cool little deli and bought some fresh cheese, meat and bread and sat in a park and had a nice little picnic. While we were eating this man playing the acordian played for us the whole
time. He wasnt any normal musician, he was this goofy guy who tried to play the acordian as if it was an electric guitar. I have posted a video ( i hope it works because the lastones did not i guess). After lunch we met up with my friend Willem from Malaga who was spending the weekend in Madrid with his boyfriend Dario. Dario is a travel photographer from Miami, who also speaks fluent spanish because he is from Ecuador (i think). We had a drink with them and walked around to see some more beautiful architecture of Madrid. We went for churros at this authentic little place in the city and then caught a movie, Vantage Point, at night. This movie is about the US President being shot in Salamanca, Spain. In the beginning it was great, but towards the end it was so exaggerated and very very pro USA. It was good to watch because we all got a laugh out of how much propaganda there could be in film. Late that night we returned to our hotel had some quick fruit and went to bed.
The next day we got up very early to catch a bus
to Toledo. Toledo is this small little village about an hour from Madrid. This is my favorite place we have visited so far. When we got there we tried to catch our bearings and walked around the city looking at the Cathedral, trying to find their old castle (closed for renovations) and the Synagogues. This was a great little city with some of the most amazing views possible. I have posted some pictures from that adventure as well!
On Sunday, my friend from Roanoke, Alix, arrived in Madrid from Washington DC. She is stayed in Madrid until Monday morning when her and I traveled back to Malaga. Alix was here for her Spring Break and stayed in my apartment Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday we got a hotel in Malaga city and partied the Malaga way. Jaclyn came over for Sevilla for the weekend and hung with us. Alix fit right into the Spanish life and he elementary Spanish quickly upgraded to intermediate after one week in this amazing country. We put Alix into a taxi on Saturday morning at 5 am, and hoped she would make it to the airport on time. All is well and
little Alix is in the USA safe and sound. Im very happy she came. While she was here I got to show off my city and learned to appreciate it so much more. We did some sightseeing and I have posted several pictures from that.
I grow to love Malaga more and more everyday. As far as classes go: I cannot understand my teachers very well but some of them are allowing me to do a project instead of the exam. Some of them are not, which is making my life somewhat difficult. I have made friends in my classes that are allowing me to copy their notes after class, so that is helping a lot. We have this week off for Semana Santa (easter week). Malaga is now transformed into a crazy religious city with over 10 different parades scheduled each day. I will be posting pictures for that. My friend Kat and I are taking day trips around this area to get away from the madness for a couple of days. I will try to be better about posting!
Love you all.. and come visit!
